It uses asymmetrical clipping, which Boss had a patent on at the time, which distorts the positive and negative sides of the waveform differently. Other drives from the same era, like the Tube Screamer, used symmetrical clipping, which made for a smoother sound but meant some of the character of the original signal was lost. This one has the 8 leg TL4558P chip
