Pumila Norway Spruce (Picea abies 'Pumila')

Pumila Norway Spruce is a compact evergreen that brings year-round structure to beds that need a steady, reliable backbone. Its low, spreading shape helps fill space without blocking views, so it works well along foundations, borders, and rock gardens. Bright green spring growth quickly deepens to rich green, keeping the landscape looking finished through winter. Slow growth makes it easy to place with confidence and enjoy for years with minimal size management.

Distinctive Features

This dwarf selection of Norway spruce forms a broad, low mound with dense branching that spreads more outward than upward, and older plants may develop a subtle central rise. Short needles create a refined texture, with fresh tips emerging brighter green in spring before settling into deeper green for the season. Small, drooping cones can appear occasionally on mature plants, but foliage and form are the main appeal. Mature size is variable by site and age, but a conservative expectation is about 1.5 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 6 feet wide over time.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun to part shade, with best density in full sun.
  • Soil: Moist, well-drained soil is ideal, and slightly acidic conditions are a good fit.
  • Water: Keep evenly moist during establishment, then water during extended dry periods.
  • USDA Zones: Zones 3 to 7.
  • Mature Size: About 1.5 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 6 feet wide over time.
  • Habit: Low, broadly mounding and spreading evergreen with dense branching.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use the dense, low mound as a focal point at the front of a bed or in a rock garden for year-round structure.
  • Foundation Planting: Place along the front of foundation beds to keep lines clean without blocking windows or walkways.
  • Border Front: Repeat in small groupings to create a consistent evergreen edge that holds through winter.
  • Rock Garden: Tuck among stone and low perennials to highlight its compact scale and refined needle texture.
  • Conifer Grouping: Pair with blue and gold dwarf conifers to build layered contrast and four-season form.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Water deeply after planting and maintain consistent moisture through the first growing season.
  • Mulching: Apply mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture and reduce weeds, keeping mulch off the stems.
  • Pruning: Prune only to remove dead or damaged growth, and lightly shape in late winter if you want a cleaner outline.
  • Fertilizing: Feed lightly in early spring only if growth is weak, using a slow-release fertilizer for evergreens.
  • Monitoring: Watch for spider mites during hot, dry weather and address early if needles begin to dull or stipple.
  • Site Fit: Provide good drainage and avoid hot, exposed sites in warm climates to reduce stress.

Why Choose Pumila Norway Spruce?

  • Space-Smart Evergreen: Delivers dependable conifer structure without the size of a full tree.
  • Dense, Finished Look: Tight branching keeps beds looking intentional in every season.
  • Slow Growth: Predictable growth reduces long-term pruning and size management.
  • Four-Season Texture: Rich green needles provide steady contrast for flowering and foliage plants.
  • Browse Tolerance: Often less preferred by deer than many broadleaf evergreens, though browsing can still occur.

If you want a compact evergreen that stays neat and brings lasting structure, Pumila Norway Spruce is a strong choice. Give it sun, reliable drainage, and steady moisture while it establishes, then let its natural mound do the work. Over time it becomes a low-fuss anchor that keeps borders and foundation beds looking composed year-round.

It works well, but it’s expensive and greasy
Size: 6 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
As far as sun protection goes, this has worked perfectly for my family. Spray it on, blend it in, good to go. No sunburn. There are a few annoying things about it though. The price is incredibly high, imo. It is unscented, which is rare for sunscreen, but it smells like alcohol when wet. Also, this stuff is oily. It makes everything it touches greasy looking (hair, clothes, hands…) I like this overall for an alternative to thick mineral sunscreens. It’s pretty convenient.

Great for sensitive skin
Size: 2 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I have extremely sensitive skin and recently found out my skin hates the sun due to my autoimmune issues. This sunscreen doesn't break my skin out, keeps me from getting sunburnt and doesn't have a bunch of fragrance. This travel size has been perfect for throwing in my bag for a day at the baseball park or beach. This is a non greasy and no whitecast spray that has a high spf too. I highly recommend it.

Apply BEFORE leaving the house!
Size: 6 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I have fair (freckle don’t tan, burn easily then peel and back to white) and sensitive skin. So does my son. I live on the coast, in a southern state and vacation in the Caribbean often. After too many years of getting burned, I finally found Coola a couple years ago. It has revolutionized my time in the sun. Here’s the thing tho. If you don’t apply it properly, it’s not gonna work. If you’re looking for something to put on AT the pool or beach, go for something else (with zinc oxide preferably). If you’re willing to take 5 mins before you go to do it, you’ll be very happy. Kids especially are hard enough to get covered before they see water anyway! Here’s some tips: Spray everyone OUTSIDE (even the unscented can overwhelm inside, and you really don’t need to be breathing in ANY sunscreen) DO NOT USE ON FACE. It will burn your eyes when you sweat/swim. Choose a cream or face stick. Spray until skin is wet. You’re not looking for a light misting, you’re going for full coverage. The can can sound like it’s spraying, but if you don’t see the product on the skin, you’re gonna get burned. Give it 5 mins to dry before putting on shirts/cover ups. Reapply between 2 & 3 hours of water exposure. (We usually dry off, respray, then have a snack or lunch) Give it 15 - 20 mins to soak in before you hit the water again. I’ve found a 6oz can will usually take care of two adults and a child for the day (initial and resprays). It’s a tad expensive, so we use Coola on days we plan to be out for more than a couple hours, or every day in the Caribbean, since the sun is SO intense. The 2oz is ‘touch up’ sized. It may take care of a child’s initial spray, but I’ve found it more suited for adding additional spray to areas that feel a bit crispy, rather than using it on a single application.

Toxic ingredients
Size: 2 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
There are endocrine disruptors in here that are harmful to your health. I nearly got to the point of being disabled from endocrine issues. Has ingredients that ruin fertility, raise risk of cancer, and ruin your endocrine system. I hope these brands can take these ingredients out and begin to care about consumers health.
