The northern elderberry. Bold flowers. Brilliant fruit. Wildlife essential.

Sambucus racemosa, the Red Elderberry, is the most cold-hardy elderberry species in North America, native from the Arctic tree line through the Rocky Mountains and across the northern tier of the continent in conditions that would kill its American Black Elderberry relative. It produces large, pyramidal clusters of creamy white flowers in spring followed by brilliant red to scarlet berries that ripen in midsummer, weeks earlier than any other elderberry, creating one of the most vivid red berry displays available in a native woodland shrub. The berries are eaten intensively by songbirds during the critical pre-migration feeding period in late summer and the shrub's dense habit provides essential nesting cover in the cool, moist forests and mountain slopes where it grows. If you are looking to buy Red Elderberry seeds or grow this northern native from seed, this is the elderberry for cold climates, mountain gardens, and cool-summer landscapes where the Black Elderberry performs less reliably.

  • Brilliant red berries ripening in midsummer, weeks earlier than Black Elderberry, consumed intensively by songbirds
  • The most cold-hardy elderberry in North America, thriving in zone 3 conditions that stress other elderberry species
  • Large pyramidal flower clusters in spring attractive to native bees and pollinators
  • Native across northern North America from Newfoundland through the Rocky Mountains to Alaska
  • Dense multi-stemmed habit providing critical nesting cover for forest songbirds

Things you probably did not know about the Red Elderberry

The berries are mildly toxic when raw but safe when cooked. Red Elderberry berries contain sambunigrin, a cyanogenic glycoside that causes nausea and vomiting when berries are consumed raw in significant quantities. Cooking or drying the berries destroys this compound completely, and cooked Red Elderberry has been used for jellies, wines, and medicinal preparations across its range by Indigenous peoples for centuries. Birds are not affected by sambunigrin and consume the berries freely. This is the primary reason the berries should not be eaten raw off the bush.

It is one of the fastest-establishing native shrubs in disturbed or logged forest habitat. Red Elderberry is a classic forest edge and disturbance pioneer, one of the first native shrubs to colonize logged areas, burned sites, and avalanche paths in mountain and northern forest environments. It grows rapidly from seed after disturbance, providing quick wildlife cover and food while slower-recovering species establish. This pioneer role makes it ecologically important far beyond its own food and cover contributions.

Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Coast used the hollow stems as blowguns and flutes. The pithy, hollow stems of Red Elderberry have been used across Pacific Coast and northern woodland cultures for centuries as blowgun tubes for small game, as flutes and whistles for music and ceremony, and as spouts for extracting honey and other liquids from containers. The hollow stems are easily cleaned and provide a naturally formed tube that requires no additional shaping.

The flowers can be used for elderflower cordial with the same technique as Black Elderberry. Red Elderberry flowers have a similar delicate muscat fragrance to Black Elderberry flowers and can be used to make elderflower cordial, fritters, and wine using the same methods. The flavor is slightly different but the culinary applications are comparable. Harvesting the flowers before they fully open gives the most fragrant and flavorful result.

Highly recommend.
Color: Cocoa
My favorite purchase for a recent trip across three continents. Fits in pocket (I mean it’s a tight fit, but it will fit). Perfect in cargo pant pocket. Has two separate compartments for paper bills which is nice - you can keep your home currency in one and travel currency in the other. Really sleek looking. Bought four of these and we all loved ours. Highly recommend.

Nice wallet. Just received it and used on trip to Italy
Too early to rate for durability, but it came quickly, looks nice, and appears to be well-made. Was a godsend on my trip to Italy and back. With all the times you have to show your passport (usually dragging your luggage with you), my passport was always at the ready, secure in my wallet in my pocket. I would not travel abroad without it. Not only that, it will serve as my daily wallet as well

Pen holder feature isn't good
Color: Cocoa
Edited review: previously I gave this a two-star review because when I inserted the pen into the pen holder the wallet couldn't close anymore... I tried taking it out putting it back in a few times and it seemed obvious to me that something was wrong and I just could not figure out why the wallet possibly was having an issue closing even though it's designed to hold a pen... To me it seemed obvious that when inserting the pen you should have the clip on the inside where are the bills go.... That single millimeter of space that that clip takes up in the bill fold causes the wallet to not be able to close properly so it springs open. Needless to say that felt extremely cheap for a product of this price and I was very unhappy and considering a return and after writing a bad review I happen to see product pictures with the clip on the inside of the wallet where your cards go and it dawned on me that I had just simply put the pen in in the wrong orientation. That completely solves the issue. So updated back to five stars, and the wallet is great. 2n update after using it for a week on an international trip so I was carrying my passport. Worked great - made me feel safe to always have my passport and room for all my most important documents inside a -just- large enough for a passport wallet. I really don't think they could have saved another millimeter and still made such a quality wallet. Having a micro pen in there is icing on the cake - makes you feel like James bond. I also felt safer having a hidden bill compartment so your not showing a fat stack of foreign currency (I mean depends on your use case but I was in some rather poor areas and this added some peace of mind and 'security' in my opinion). You can just keep some small bills up front and your real stack on the hidden flap. I won't dock a star for it - but keeping this on a back pocket so you're sitting on it because it's bigger and the way it holds cards after just one week there's already card imprints on the leather (just imagine your older leather wallets where the cards start wearing through the leather) Also I tested the RFD blocking and it indeed works. I'm unable to scan any cards through the wallet and that was an important feature to me. Even when the wallet is open and I ran scanners directly over cards (in the sleeves) it still didn't pick anything up.

Works
Color: Cocoa
Good wallet that can fit a passport, hold cash, and cards. “Hidden” pockets too, but that just means more storage space to me. Soft and supple leather that gets better when conditioned and cared for properly. Main feature I like is the RFID blocking, I only get wallets that have it. Expensive- yes. Works, also yes.

Really bad amazon customer service
Color: Black
The wallet seems great but the box it came in wasn't sealed. It was supposed to arrive by the 22nd and it arrived 4 days later. I needed it for a trip on the 1st. When I took it out, the wallet had two scratches at the back and the pen was also scratched. I contacted customer service and they couldn't help me in any way to get the replacement item before my departure date. I kept it anyways because of thr necessity. Gave it 3 stars because of the good quality of the wallet
