Spring new growth looks like a clump of emerging asparagus opening into rounded, blue-green leaves and loose spikes comprised of "pea" flowers in many shades of purples, blues, whites, and cream-yellows...the photos show some examples of POSSIBLE bloom colors. The blooms are followed by black seed pods considered by many to be worthy in and of themselves. These plants are tough, beautiful, attractive to butterflies, and nitrogen-fixing.
Best grown in full sun with some drainage, no puddles please! Happy to grow in lean, inhospitable, compact soil, they have a deep taproot, which allows these plants from the Midwest to thrive in our dry summers, but they do not transplant well.
