With time, the crown develops multiple branches, forming a broad, umbrella-like canopy. Mature trees can grow 6–10 metres in height and 4–8 metres wide, although they remain slow-growing for many years. Older specimens often display striking branching silhouettes and thickened trunks with reddish resin, historically called “dragon’s blood.”

This species is extremely slow-growing but remarkably hardy. It thrives in full sun, tolerates poor, sandy soils, and is highly drought tolerant once established. Dracaena draco is evergreen, wind tolerant, and suitable for coastal conditions, but it does not tolerate frost. Minimal maintenance is required, with occasional removal of old leaves the only routine care. Its resilience and unique form make it particularly well suited to dry and exposed sites.
