Days to Maturity: 110

Copra replacement with higher yield potential, Patterson Onion is grown as a bulb vegetable. The plant sets uniform, 3- to 4-inch, globe-shaped bulbs with sweet, slightly pungent flavor. Onions are a good source of folate and vitamin C. Storage potential is 10 to 12 months.

This plant is a member of the amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae). Typically grown as an annual, the onion is an herbaceous biennial plant with an upright habit of linear, cylindrical, hollow, glaucous leaves that arise in a basal rosette and are typically bluish green in color. The plant has a medium growth rate.

Onions are great companion plants in the garden. They naturally deter certain garden pests, like aphids, Japanese beetles, sugar beet-flea beetles, deer, and rabbits. Onions can also improve the flavor of some of their companions, while some companions, like chamomile and summer savory, can improve the onion's flavor. Scattering them around the vegetable garden helps to produce healthier harvests.

Think of onions as a leaf crop, not a root crop. They prefer full sun and loose, fertile, moist, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.2 to 6.5. A lower or higher pH may result in poor bulb quality or small yields. Long-day onion varieties grow well in the northern regions with 14 to 16 hours of day length in the summer. The more sun and space between plants, the bigger the bulb. Onions have shallow root systems and need consistent moisture. Onions are heavy feeders. Adding manure or compost to the soil several weeks before planting (or the winter before) and applying fertilizer when planting and again when plants have 5 to 6 leaves increases plant size. And since each leaf represents one ring of the onion bulb, more leaves equal more rings, resulting in bigger bulbs. Keep beds free of weeds, which will compete with the onions for water and nutrients. To avoid disease, practice crop rotation, planting onions in a different location every year.

A cool-season vegetable, one of the first to be planted in the garden, Patterson Onion Sets can be direct sown into the garden as soon as the soil is workable in early spring, weeks before the last frost-free date, for a summer harvest. But they can also be started indoors and transplanted, spring and fall. Planting sets in midsummer will produce a fall or spring harvest. They need cold temperatures to germinate and grow. Plant shallowly and early but protect plants from heavy frost with row covers.

Harvest onions when two-thirds of the leaves fall over and turn brown. Leave them lying in the garden for 1 to 2 days to dry, if weather permits; continue drying them for 2 to 3 weeks in a cool, dry, sunny location; and once completely dried, store them in a dark, dry environment in mesh bags or crates with good air circulation.

Onion sets are small onion bulbs grown in the previous season. The partially formed bulbets are around ¾ inch in diameter, making them easier to plant than seed. They develop into full-size bulbs quickly after planting, in approximately 3½ months. Sets tend to produce stronger, more vigorous plants compared to seed, ensuring larger yields.

Worthwhile!
Size: Medium/Large, Color: Turkey Day Drumstick - Large
I have a small dog with a really strong bite! Usually have to buy toys that are meant for bigger dogs. This has lasted us for what feels like forever. It does sound very heavy when dropped! My dog loves it though! Would definitely recommend!

Ohhh Mr. Iguana
Size: Medium/Large, Color: Illana the Iguana - Large
Mr. Iguana is a house favorite! I got my first one of these in a barkbox and my dog loved it so much, i went on the hunt for another one. Amazon saved the day! I own about 7 of these now. They are prefect for dogs just love to chew, they hold up great! And they are heavy duty, super easy to clean! My dogs are very happy, great value for the money! Doesn't have a smell, vibrant colors! Noise level is quiet, minus my dogs chewing !

Not for strong chewers
Size: Medium/Large, Color: Dog Ness Monster - Large
Initially, I really liked this for my dog. She is about 8 months old and still loves to chew and destroys most toys in a few minutes. When we got this, it seemed like it would hold up for a while despite being clearly gnawed on. Unfortunately, once she focused on the softer "water" portion of the toy, that is where things went downhill with this toy. After a few short chew sessions, she was tearing chunks out of it. We had purchased a replacement since she liked the original so much, and after about 5 minutes with the replacement, she had taken enough out of the blue section that we immediately threw that one out as well. Overall while the green portion held up, the blue didn't. I can't recommend this for strong chewers.

Definitely not indestructable
Size: Medium/Large, Color: Dog Ness Monster - Large, Size: Medium/Large, Color: Dog Ness Monster - Large
I have a 1-year-old toy fox terrier (Rocky, pictured). He has been chewing on this toy for seven months now; it is one of his favorites. He has been unable to seriously damage the "ocean" portion of this toy, but as you can see from the provided image, the sea serpent has not faired that well. It is missing its snout and smaller portions of the humps. My guess is that the advertiser images showing much larger dogs with "like new" versions of the toy are just that...NEW AND UNCHEWED. I have not had to clean up bits of this toy from my floor, so I assume Rocky has been swallowing them. My hope is that the yellow material of the serpent is not chemically dangerous when exposed to digestive fluids. Rocky easily destroys plush toys in a matter of days if not hours and, consumed pieces of a small microfiber blanket that he liked to toss around and play tug-of-war with (past tense as he destroyed it and has since been trashed after I began finding feces-stained undigested pieces of it lying around). Since this toy has survived seven months and has remained recognizable, I have to agree it is durable. Just beware, if my small toy fox terrier can damage the toy as pictured, expect your large breed chewer to do similar or worse damage. Also, the toy is very heavy! When Rocky drops it down a flight of stairs, it makes a MAJOR thud at the bottom, and sometimes makes me wonder if it might crack the large tile at the bottom. I cautiously recommend the product. Note the yellow frisbee in Rocky's picture. It is only a few months old and surprisingly has not suffered any chew damage despite substantial abuse. It appears to bend in the wind like a proverbial reed, evading damage by yielding to pressure.

Dog loves it! For tough chewers for sure
Size: Medium/Large, Color: Dog Ness Monster - Large, Size: Medium/Large, Color: Dog Ness Monster - Large
Dog absolutely loves it, he’s super rough on all of his toys they usually last about 10 minutes bore they are torn to shreds. It’s lasting through his chewing so I’m happy. It’s also super cute.
