C. ternatea is a species within the legume family of Fabaceae that is native to Southern Asia, but has become naturalized in parts of Africa, Australia, and the Americas. The plant is most known for its flowers, which are a deep blue with light yellow in the center, reaching about 1.5 inches  long and 1 inch wide. Some cultivars will produce white flowers. The fruits are 2-3 inches long, flat pods with six to ten seeds per pod. They are edible when tender. C. Ternatea is often grown as an ornamental plant or for it's nitrogen-fixing capabilities in renewing the soil it is placed in, like many other legume family plants. It is a popular food plant in Asia where the flowers are used as food and fabric dyes, used for teas, as well as many other uses. Clitoria Ternatea seeds can be lightly scarified to assist in germination but can also be placed directly into a light well draining soil medium.  Seeds should be soaked in purified water for 15-24 hours prior to planting. The seeds should be planted no more than ¼ inch deep, and the temperature should be kept between 70ºF and 85ºF for best results. Germination typically takes 10-20 days at ideal temperatures and up to 5 weeks in cooler climates. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
