The Queen of night plant, known as Epiphyllum oxypetalum, is a stunning, night-blooming cereus cactus that has captivated plant enthusiasts worldwide. Its allure comes from its spectacular, large, fragrant flowers that bloom only for just one night and droop by dawn. This plant has a sprawling, epiphytic growth habit, producing long, spineless flat, green stems that climb or cascade over surfaces, making it ideal for hanging baskets or trellises.

The Queen of the Night is considered a symbol of luck and prosperity in some cultures like India or China, with blooming nights seen as auspicious events. This ephemeral beauty, combined with its easy care and adaptability, has made it a popular choice for homes, greenhouses, and tropical gardens.

Apart from being called Queen of the Night cactus also has several other names, such as Dutchman’s Pipe Cactus, Princess of the night, Orchid Cactus, and Night-Blooming Cereus. These names reflect their distinctive blooming habits and unique floral structure.

Native to the rainforests of Central and South America, particularly Mexico and parts of Brazil.

It thrives in warm, humid environments, growing as an epiphyte on trees or rocky surfaces, where it absorbs moisture and nutrients from its surroundings.

Over time, it has also become naturalized in many tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, including India and Southeast Asia.

This cactus is unique in that it does not resemble the traditional spiny desert cacti.

Instead, it has broad, flat, green stems that function as leaves, giving it a lush, tropical appearance.

These stems can grow long and arching, sometimes reaching several feet in length. The plant’s epiphytic nature allows it to climb or sprawl, making it a versatile choice for hanging baskets, pots, or trellises.

Under optimal conditions, Queen of the Night can grow 10 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Since it grows primarily through its long, flat stems, it requires ample space to thrive. Regular pruning can help control its size while encouraging more vigorous blooming.

The Queen of the Night’s flowers are its most remarkable feature. The large, white, and highly fragrant blossoms open only at night, typically during warm summer months, and release an intoxicating scent that attracts nocturnal pollinators like moths and bats. However, by early morning, the flowers wilt, making their beauty a fleeting but unforgettable sight.

After flowering, the night blooming cereus plant produced oblong, purplish-red, and edible fruit. It's similar to dragon fruit or pitaya, but smaller.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Epiphyllum oxypetalum is its unpredictable blooming cycle. Many gardeners eagerly await the moment when their plant decides to bloom, as it often takes years before the first flowers appear.

When and How to Water Your Queen of the Night

The Queen of the Night is a drought-tolerant epiphytic cactus, which can survive with minimal water. While it does require some moisture to thrive, it is highly adapted to periods of dryness. It stores water in its fleshy stems, reducing the need for frequent watering. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so well-draining soil is crucial.

In the spring and summer, during the active growing season, water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. In warm months, watering once every 7-10 days is usually sufficient. If you grow outdoors in a hot climate, check the moisture levels and adjust accordingly. Indoors, a similar schedule works, but humidity may affect watering frequency. Always use a pot with drainage holes to prevent excess moisture buildup.

In late fall and winter, during the dormant season, watering should be significantly reduced. The plant requires very little moisture during this period. Watering once a month or when the soil is completely dry is ideal. Keeping the plant dry during dormancy helps prevent fungal issues and ensures it remains healthy for the next growing cycle.

Light Requirements – Where to Place Your Queen of the Night

When grown indoors as a houseplant, the Queen of the Night prefers bright, indirect light.

A north- or east-facing window works best, ensuring it receives sufficient brightness without direct exposure to intense sun rays.

Artificial grow lights can supplement natural light if needed, especially in lower-light homes.

Direct sun for extended periods can scorch the leaves.

For outdoor growth, this plant thrives in partial shade or dappled sunlight, mimicking its natural habitat beneath tree canopies.

It requires about 4-6 hours of filtered sunlight daily. If growing in direct sun, provide shade during the hottest parts of the day. In hotter climates, protecting the plant from the intense afternoon sun prevents leaf burning and stress.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The Queen of the Night Plant thrives in well-drained, airy soil that mimics its native epiphytic environment. Avoid heavy soils that retain too much moisture, as this can cause root rot. Planting them in ordinary soil will result in compacted roots, stunted growth, and most likely root rot. Instead, make or buy a well-draining potting mix, or ideally use our specialized cactus potting mix, opens in a new tab that contains 5 natural substrates and mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your cactus to thrive.

A balanced liquid NPK fertilizer with a 5-10-5 ratio should be applied once a year in the spring. Avoid over-fertilizing, as excess nutrients can lead to weak growth and fewer blooms. During the dormant season, stop fertilizing altogether. The plant naturally slows its growth, so additional nutrients are unnecessary and can do more harm than good.

Hardiness Zones & More

When grown indoors as a houseplant, the Queen of the Night prefers temperatures between 60-75°F. It enjoys moderate to high humidity levels, around 50-70%. A humidity tray or occasional misting can help in dry climates. Indoors, bright indirect light is best, ensuring proper photosynthesis without direct sunburn.

In the United States, this is mostly an indoor plant, but if you live in southern Florida or Hawaii then you can cultivate it outdoors in USDA zones 9-11.

It thrives in warm climates with mild winters but is not frost-hardy.

If temperatures drop below 50°F, it is best to bring the plant indoors.

Outdoor humidity should ideally be above 50%, but it can adapt to drier conditions with occasional watering adjustments.

Wildlife – Queen of the Night Flowers Attract the Following Friendly Pollinators

The Queen of the Night is known for its fragrant, night-blooming flowers, which attract nocturnal pollinators. Its large, white blooms open after sunset, drawing moths and bats, which are its primary pollinators. These creatures are essential for their reproduction in the wild.

According to the ASPCA, Epiphyllum oxypetalum is considered non-toxic to humans, cats, and dogs, making it a pet-friendly houseplant. It is safe to touch and handle, making it a great option for households with pets or small children. Additionally, this plant is known for its stunning nocturnal blooms that can add a touch of beauty to any indoor space.

How to Propagate Your Epiphyllum oxypetalum

To propagate your Epiphyllum oxypetalum, start by taking a cutting from a healthy, mature plant. Allow the cutting to callus over for a few days before planting it in well-draining soil. Keep the soil consistently moist and provide indirect sunlight to encourage root growth. With proper care, your cutting should develop roots and eventually grow into a new plant.

Clean Ingredients & Leaves Teeth Feeling Smooth
Size: Pack of 1, 4 Ounce, Set name: B. Whitening
I’ve tried many natural toothpastes, and this one quickly became a favorite. The texture feels smooth, and my teeth feel really clean after brushing. I love that it contains nano hydroxyapatite and is fluoride-free, especially for sensitive teeth. The flavor is fresh without being overpowering, and it doesn’t leave a weird aftertaste. It’s also gentle enough for everyday use and makes my teeth feel polished and healthy. Definitely worth trying if you want a cleaner alternative toothpaste.

Perfect Fluoride alternative
Size: Pack of 1, 4 Ounce, Set name: B. Whitening
I bought this because it's popular in other countries like Japan. America is so behind using fluoride, when it's been proven to cause pituitary gland problems. If you're looking for a fluoride-free toothpaste look no further. It works well, you just unscrew and apply to your brush. Pro tip: use a sonic toothbrush and glide on your teeth at a 45° angle. Using this toothpaste for months, 2 minutes twice a day, has made my teeth visibly whiter. The flavor is not super strong, so it's suitable for kids and really anyone. Super easy and simple to use, it works like regular toothpaste. Smells minty, it's fluoride-free, and medium sized. It'll last me about 2 months, which I find worth it.

Fluoride who?
Size: Pack of 3, 4 Ounce, Set name: B. Whitening
Great product definitely works better than your traditional fluoride or fluoride free toothpaste it actually combats plaque and strengthens the enamel of your teeth I have physically and visibly seen the difference not just in my teeth but gums. Tastes great cleans well clean ingredients the only downside is it's unfortunately very pricey and if you're buying for not just yourself but a family it can start to add up fast just something to consider before purchasing. I love the tube and cap design it's gentle on your gums and teeth and it has good ingredients making the minty flavor taste more natural rather than a synthetic mint flavor and this product actually whitens your teeth. keep in mind that this isn't a replacement for teeth whitening treatments and it's also not a replacement for good dental hygiene like flossing/brushing multiple times a day. If your suffering from serious Dental issues this will not cure it but it is an excellent alternative to fluoride toothpaste that provide little to no benefit for your actual oral and overall dental health. The reason for four not five stars is because of the price I think if they could continue making the same product got the same level of quality for a little less money it would be a five-star item

URGENT!!!! REALLY WORKS!!!! Fact ✔️
Size: Pack of 3, 4 Ounce, Set name: B. Whitening
I was immediately convinced this would work due to its ingredients, I had a previous filling fallout. So I immediately requested he apply another filling while I was getting some other dental work done, and the dentist said there was no rush to install, A new filling, showed me a picture. It looked great still white no cavities. In the high definition, microscope photo he showed me,It almost look like the inside of a white Jacuzzi tub with molded seat, I had the rest of the work done and didn’t get to go back soon enough, and the tooth started to bother me when something sweet would hit that spot and I looked in the mirror and it was starting to turn a light brownish color, I had just heard about HA toothpaste, I did some research and this is what I found Hydroxyapatite = the SAME mineral your teeth are made of • Your enamel is mostly this material (like 70–97% of tooth structure) • So instead of adding a chemical… it’s literally rebuilding with the original material When you brush with nano-hydroxyapatite: • Tiny particles fill in microscopic cracks in enamel • Helps reduce sensitivity • Can make teeth look whiter naturally (smoother surface reflects light better) • Strengthens teeth against future damage so I ordered 3 pack Boka HA and on everything I love in three days of brushing for 2 minutes twice a day morning at night, do not brush your teeth with tapwater ever!!! It has more chlorine than a swimming pool, calcium lead, and other harsh chemicals that will take away the layer it’s going to build always use bottled water and do not rinse this toothpaste out of your mouth. Let it settle in and pack it into your molars and in between your teeth,it was completely healed and no sensitivity to sugar, hot or cold, it tastes great, and the fluoride free is the only way to go fluoride will destroy your tooth enamel, I gave the other two tubes to my kids and they love it, I am looking forward to less dental appointments for sure!!!!!

Five stars for BOKA without hesitation.
Size: Pack of 1, 4 Ounce, Set name: A. Ela Mint
I have tried a lot of natural toothpastes over the years and I can honestly say that Boka completely surprised me in the best possible way. From the very first use it felt like I had finally found a toothpaste that balances modern science with a clean ingredient philosophy. You will not be disappointed. The standout ingredient here is nano hydroxyapatite, which is the same mineral that naturally makes up tooth enamel. That immediately caught my attention because instead of simply masking dental issues it actually supports remineralization. After learning more about nano hydroxyapatite and how it interacts with enamel I felt confident giving this toothpaste a real trial. The texture is smooth and creamy and it spreads easily across the teeth. Some fluoride free toothpastes can feel chalky or thin but this one feels refined and well formulated. It produces a gentle foam that feels pleasant while brushing but never overwhelming. The flavor is another area where this toothpaste shines. It is refreshing without being harsh or overly minty. My mouth feels clean and balanced after brushing rather than blasted with artificial intensity. That subtle freshness actually lasts much longer than I expected. After about two weeks of consistent use I started noticing that my teeth felt smoother throughout the day. That polished feeling you normally get right after a dental cleaning lasted longer than usual. My teeth also appeared brighter which was a welcome bonus. Another thing I appreciate is the ingredient transparency. There are no questionable additives and it is completely fluoride free which is important for people who prefer alternatives that still support enamel health. Knowing that nano hydroxyapatite is widely used in advanced dental care products in other parts of the world made this even more compelling. The packaging is clean and modern and the tube dispenses easily without making a mess on the cap. It feels like a premium product from start to finish. What really impressed me is how well this toothpaste balances effectiveness, comfort, and thoughtful formulation. It manages to feel gentle while still leaving my teeth incredibly clean and refreshed. If you are looking for a high quality fluoride free toothpaste that focuses on enamel support and a healthier approach to oral care then I highly recommend giving this one a try. It has absolutely earned a permanent place in my daily routine and it is one of the few natural toothpastes I genuinely look forward to using every day.
