All About Aloe
The first mention of Aloe Vera being used as a medicine dates back to 1700 BC. There are 200 biologically active compounds in this amazing plant! They have helped to treat more than 250 human health problems. Alexander the Great used the Aloe Vera plant to heal the wounds of soldiers, and Cleopatra bathed in its juices to maintain her youthful appearance.  The Chinese hailed aloe as an elixir of youth. Christopher Columbus declared it one of the four indispensable vegetables.  It is one of the most famous plants of Arabian medicine, and it remains very popular for medicinal use in East Africa even today.

Aloe Vera is a plant of many surprises.  It looks like a cactus and grows in dry surroundings but belongs to the lily family.  It stays moist and cool where other plants wilt, shutting down its pores to prevent water loss.

Aloe has been shown to be very adept at removing formaldehyde from the air in low concentrations.  It is also different from most house plants in that it releases oxygen at night and removes carbon dioxide in the air. Therefore, it is a great plant to grow on a windowsill where you sleep.
