Also called soft monkey tail cactus, it gets its common name from its hairy appearance that resembles a monkey's tail.

In spring and early summer, this cactus produces bright red flowers. Its origins can be traced to the mountainous countryside of Santa Cruz, Bolivia, where it can be found growing naturally in rocky soil. As a houseplant, it's commonly grown in hanging baskets, which allow its long drooping stems to grow freely. Each stem can increase in size by nearly a foot every year.

🐒 Monkey Tail Cactus Grow and Care Instructions🐒

~ Grow Instructions ~

The Monkey Tail cactus seeds are very easy to germinate, if given the ideal conditions. Before planting the seeds, the soil needs to be light, well aerated and drains fast.

In short, loamy and sandy soils are perfect for growing monkey tail cactus seeds. It doesn’t have to be combined with any other soil. And it is pathogen-free, helps fight root rot, and has the right pH level for a cactus plant.

Step 1: Fill a terracotta pot with the cactus soil mix of your choice. Delicately firm down and level the surface of the soil. Then scatter the Monkey Tail cactus seeds over the surface. Make sure not to plant them too deep.

Step 2: Lightly sprinkle a thin layer of fine grit or vermiculite over the seeds, covering the entire surface of the soil. Leave the terracotta pot in a warm windowsill or a greenhouse, covered with a clear plastic bag to conserve soil moisture.

Step 3: Seedlings will sprout within a few weeks. Just remove the plastic bag and water the soil when it becomes dry.

Step 4: The next spring, the seedlings should be ready to be transplanted. Use a spoon or fork to tease out individual cacti lightly. Be careful not to catch the spikes on your skin.

Step 5: part-fill a small container with gritty compost and lightly ease the cactus seedling into place. You can use tweezers to make sure the seedlings are not sitting at an angle.

Step 6: Fill around the seedling with compost and only water it when the soil is dry. Use the spoon to arrange gravel around your seedlings. Place it in a sunny area such as your windowsill.

~ Care Instructions ~

Monkey tail cacti are relatively easy for beginners to grow. Follow these plant care guidelines to ensure that your monkey tail cactus thrives.

Light: Monkey tail cacti thrive in areas that receive plenty of bright, indirect sunlight. While indirect light is ideal, this desert-native cactus will tolerate some full sun as well.

Water: Water your cacti weekly in the spring and summer growing season. Your monkey tail cactus will store water in its stems for fall and winter when it enters its dormancy period. Lightly water it during the off-season when the soil is completely dry, but be careful to avoid overwatering your plant as overwatering can lead to root rot.

Soil: A well-draining organic soil mix or specially formulated cactus soil mix is ideal. Look for cactus mix at your local nursery or add perlite to a standard potting mix to help the soil drain excess water.

Fertilizer: During its growing season in the spring and summer, apply a low-nitrogen, high-potassium fertilizer monthly to encourage growth.

Pot: The monkey tail cactus has a shallow root system and doesn't need a large pot to thrive. As the stems grow past the length of the pot, however, consider repotting your plant in a hanging basket to allow the flowing stems to trail.

Pests: The monkey tail cactus is prone to infestations of mealybugs, spider mites, and scale insects. If you notice an infestation, use a cotton ball to apply rubbing alcohol along the spines to remove the pests. Then apply a gentle insecticide like neem oil to prevent another infestation.

Propagation: To propagate your monkey tail cactus, cut off part of a stem and allow it to dry for several days. Once the end has formed a callus, plant it in rich, organic cactus soil. Place the plant in a humid area that receives a mix of full sun and partial shade. Your plant should begin to root within a few weeks.

Thank you so very much for supporting my small business!!!

🪴Happy Planting🪴

Our perfect chew toy for a relentless chewer!
Size: 2 Count (Pack of 1), Style: Pack of 2
We have looked high and low for a ball that our Australian Shepherd couldn't destroy. Read on to find out why we are sticking with this one. We've used other Chuckit! products in the past to mixed degrees of success. We absolutely love the ring fetch toy, though the dog can destroy those rings in a couple days. We tried other "nearly indestructible" balls only to have to throw them away within a couple days because our dog had destroyed them and left small pieces around the house for the baby to find. We have been COMPLETELY satisfied by these balls. They fit with the Chuckit! stick, which is a great bonus, but the most important thing is the dog hasn't been able to get pieces torn out of them. His orange one is his "indoor toy" and he's been going to town on it for weeks without any indication of wear. We periodically inspect it and are always floored to see that it's generally in the same condition as when we gave it to him. The orange color did fade a little when he left it outside for a few days in the sun, but considering how well it works otherwise, this didn't concern us at all. The "whistling" aspect of this ball is... well, an interesting gimmick but I wouldn't buy it if that's what you're interested in. Sometimes it makes noise in flight, other times it doesn't. We don't care. He chews it until he's tired of it (which is usually hours) and it squeaks and squorks on his teeth which keeps him happy as a clam. We honestly didn't think we'd find a ball that could keep up with his chewing, but this one has been phenomenal. We cannot recommend it enough!

So Far So Good
I adopted a young adult dog less than 2 weeks ago. She had spent over 12 hours a day in a crate and has excessive energy and anxiety built up. She is a strong chewer. So far, out of 6 toys, this is the only one still in one piece. It appears sturdy and extra bouncy. So much better than regular tennis balls.

My dogs favorite!
My dogs love these! They will play all day if you'd let them, these balls are their favorites. I use the chuck-it handle and they get tons of exercise in the big yard!

The Dog LOVES IT!
I bought this for my ex-wife's Pitbull. He is an aggressive chewer and usually destroys any toy I buy him. But not this one! The ball is small enough and pliable that it gives when he chomps on it. He loves this ball and seems to be his favorite toy. Thank you for making a product that he likes and can't destroy!

My Golden Retriever’s favorite
We’ve owned lots of toys and balls. This specific version (in blue) has been her absolute favorite. She’s about 72lbs and chews on this thing regularly with no visible damage. We actually own about 6 of them because they have a tendency to go missing underneath furniture and in the yard. We have two of the orange colored ones but she doesn’t like those nearly as much which I assume is because the blue is easier to see in the grass. Other than that…They bounce really well and also whistle a little when you throw them hard enough. I hope they never stop making these.
