It has now been planted in frost free areas around the world, including far southern Florida into the Keys, southern Texas, southern California and Hawaii.
- This plant features an unbranched trunk (to 12" diameter) which is topped by a fan-shaped single plane of enormous, long-stalked, banana-like, deep green leaves (20-30 per trunk). Each leaf blade is 5-10' long by 2-3' wide and appears at the end of a thick, grooved leaf stalk (petiole) which is as long or longer than the leaf blade.
- Leaf margins are sometimes split as is the case with some bananas. Up to one quart of rain water will accumulate in the expanded and cupped base of each leaf stalk, thus giving rise to the common names for this plant which suggests an emergency drinking water source for travellers in need.
- Showy 3-petaled white flowers in cymes rise from boat-shaped spathes in a manner reminiscent of this plant's bird-of-paradise (Strelitzia) relative. Flowers bloom in summer plus sporadically throughout the rest of the year.
- In early years, the trunk of this plant is subterranean (not visible), with the fan of leaves sitting on the ground. Eventually the trunk does appear and lengthen, with somewhat attractive leaf scar rings forming on the trunk surface as the lower leaves drop.

Cheap, and durable!
I bought this toy as a cheap temporary toy for my Rough Collie. Well, a month or so later, it's still alive. She has performed a 'squeakerectomy' on it, and it's lost it's springiness, but she still loves it.

Love the Stretch
I have two 15 ish pound dogs that love to pull and tug on this toy...all day long, every day. It's long enough for the humans in the house to also grab an end and not worry about getting nipped by playful pups. The fact that it stretches seems to be even more fun for the dogs. We have several other similar unstuffed long toys but they get very little attention. This toy is definitely unique and a cut above the other similar toys. The stretch seems to make all of the difference. If they had more animal choices, I would buy them all.

Dog loves it! Squeaky on both ends!
Bungee rope is not as resistant as I wished, but its fun nonetheless!
Squeaks in head and tail. Misssteped the tail and broke one squeaker, still fun though!

My dogs loves this toy
I got a few different toys for them today. I need to go through their toybox and get rid of some of the older ones. I can tell the youngster loves the toys. He has taken them into one of the crates and sat with them. Then he brought them back out. He fell asleep with his head against one of them. He has been playing tug of war with this one. And the older one has been running around with it too. Pup already pulled one eye off of this one. But the toy is intact.
