The Philodendron Squamiferum is a rare and unique plant known for its elongated, deeply lobed leaves and distinctive red, hairy petioles (stems). It’s a relatively easy-to-care-for Philodendron, but it does require some attention to thrive. Here’s a guide to caring for your Philodendron Squamiferum:
Philodendron Squamiferum prefers east or south facing indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch its leaves, while too little light can slow its growth and cause the leaves to lose their vibrant color and shape. A spot near a window with filtered light is ideal.
Water your when the plant is completely dry. Be careful not to overwater, as it can cause root rot. Always ensure the pot has good drainage. During the winter months, you can reduce watering frequency, as the plant’s growth slows down.
This plant thrives in warm temperatures between 65-80°F . It does not tolerate cold drafts or temperatures below 50 degrees, so avoid placing it near air conditioners or windows that get chilly.
Philodendron Squamiferum enjoys higher humidity levels (50% or more). If you live in a dry environment, you might want to mist the leaves regularly, use a humidifier, or place a humidity tray near the plant to keep it happy.
A well-draining, light and airy potting mix is best. You can use a general-purpose indoor plant mix with added perlite or orchid bark to ensure good drainage and root aeration.
Feed your Philodendron Squamiferum during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks. In fall and winter, you can reduce or stop fertilizing, as the plant’s growth slows.
Pruning isn’t necessary unless you want to control the size or shape of the plant. Cut back any leggy or damaged stems. You can also propagate your plant by cutting a healthy stem with a few leaves and rooting it in water or soil.
While the Philodendron Squamiferum is generally resistant to pests, it’s still good practice to check for common houseplant pests like mealybugs, spider mites, or aphids. If you find any, treat the plant with insecticidal soap or wipe the leaves with a damp cloth.
