Philodendron Green Congo

A cultivated hybrid that plays a fundamentally different game than most of its philodendron relatives — rather than climbing, trailing, or vining, the Green Congo is a self-heading variety that builds itself upright and outward from a central stem, producing tightly stacked, broadly paddle-shaped, deeply glossy dark green leaves with a leathery, almost lacquered texture that catches light richly from across a room. New leaves unfurl in a brighter, fresher green before deepening to the characteristic rich emerald of mature foliage. The petioles are stout and closely spaced along a sturdy central stem that thickens with age, creating a full, sculptural form that functions as an architectural anchor plant rather than a display piece that needs support — no moss pole, no trellis, no training required. It is not native to any Congo; the name is simply a trade designation applied to this group of self-heading erubescens-lineage hybrids.

This cultivar maintains its upright self-heading form without any support and suits floor-level display in a wide pot that accommodates its outward-spreading root system and ultimately 2-3 foot spread. Provide medium to bright indirect light — it tolerates lower light better than most variegated philodendrons given its fully green foliage, but brighter conditions produce faster growth and larger, more intensely colored leaves. Water when the top 1-2" of medium is dry, allowing full drainage and never letting roots sit in standing water; use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. Moderate humidity of 40-60% is adequate for healthy growth, making it one of the more humidity-forgiving philodendrons. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-85°F away from cold drafts. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.

Do not recommend
Edible, though barely. Definitely the worst tasting oysters I've tried of all the brands. Hopefully I don't get food poisoning as has been reported by other reviewers.

High quality product.
Warmth? I’m not sure what that means. I make a simple dish out of these, some milk, butter and salt and pepper—then I “warm” it up. They’re a little pricey but the quality and taste/flavor is great. I would definitely buy them again.

Good and can be used in many dishes.
These are pretty good mussels they have not been smoked or anything added to it but mussels, water and salt. Since they are packed like that, you can use them in a variety of dishes. I would buy them again but only when they're on sale because they are pricey.

Meaty and flavorful
I ate these straight from the tin at room temperature, sometimes sopping up the extra liquid with decent bread. I purchased these because I wanted to try an alternative to the King Oscar. I've tried a couple different kinds of mackerel over the years, and while the King Oscar has been the best I find their olive oil varieties to be a bit acrid. Not so with these Otter Kingdom fillets. Theses are actual fillets, so they are larger and meatier, and in my experience they have a looser grain than the mackerel I'm used to. They are high-quality, so I'm not detecting any bones and there's no formaldehyde-flavor, no imperfections in the cut. The oil is quite thin/watery and fairly small in volume. This isn't an issue for me, if anything I'd say it's welcome as it doesn't overpower the fish. These make a great compliment to my tinned fish rotation, which includes tuna, squid/octopus, sardines, cod liver, oysters, and sometimes sprats, salmon, and trout. The price is better than King Oscar, so I can have it more regularly without feeling like I'm being immoderate. Would recommend.
