Naughty Marietta French Marigold Heirloom Seed is a pretty gold-yellow dainty annual flower with a burgundy center topped off with a golden miniature pom-pom type center. Grows from 12 to 18 inches tall with blooms around 1.5” in diameter.

This particular marigold was an AAS (American Selection) winner in 1947. It is believed that the variety got its name from the 1935 Movie, “Naughty Marietta”, that featured a storyline of a rebellious French princess who sheds her identity and escapes to colonial New Orleans in order to avoid a prearranged marriage and finds there an unlikely true love. We were drawn to the name because of a neighboring Atlanta city — Marietta, Georgia.

These are low-maintenance sun and heat-loving plants, so transplant outdoors when danger of frost or freeze has passed. Give plants full sun for at least 6-8 hrs a day with plenty of airflow. Deadhead (remove) spent flowers and blooms will continue to produce throughout the growing season with adequate moisture and nutrients.

This cultivar is good for helping to deter certain types of destructive nematodes and to dissuade certain aphids. Plant 2 months ahead of time in soil where nematode-susceptible veggies will be planted or plant next to aphid-vulnerable veggies or herbs. Tagetes patula dried petals are also good to feed to chickens to build their immune system and to deepen the orange color in their egg yolks.

Start seed indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost date and transplant after the last spring frost. Note: This cultivar is not recommended for hydroponic growing conditions. Select a shorter variety like Gypsy Sunshine Marigold as marigolds THRIVE in hydroponic conditions and you will get extra large plants. Choosing a shorter cultivar will keep the plant from taking over your system. #speakingfromexperience
