Overview

Bok choy, also known as pak choi, is a popular asian green. Sauté or steam mature stem and leaves. Bok choy is an excellent source of Vitamin C and Vitamin A.

Conditions

For soil, use a fertile well-draining potting mix that’s tailored for vegetables. For the best quality leaves, provide full sun (6 or more hours of direct sunlight). Bok choy prefers cooler conditions for optimal growth (55-75°F), so plan to grow in early spring or fall/winter.

Planting

Use our grow calendar tool to find specific dates for your region! Seeds germinate in 7-10 days. Plant directly in the garden from early spring through midsummer. In warmer climates, bok choy is well adapted for fall plantings.

Bok choy can be grown for both baby greens as well as mature heads. For baby greens, plant outdoors directly in the garden, sowing densely in 2-4” bands. For full-sized mature heads, plant approximately 15 seeds per foot, thinning to 12” apart as seedlings grow.

Care

Bok choy requires a lot of nutrients from its soil, and it can quickly deplete the soil of nutrients. Prepare the soil in advance by mixing in additional organic matter (manure, compost, etc.).

Soil should be well-draining: roots that stand in water cause heads to rot.

Pests and Disease

Flea beetles can be controlled by covering with floating row covers from day of sowing.

Harvest

You may begin harvesting bok choy as soon as individual leaves are mature, or you can wait to harvest the entire plant all at once. For individual leaves, carefully pick from the outside. For whole heads, cut off the plant at soil level. Usable smaller leaves may sprout from the remaining crown if it is left in the ground.

Cute toys but not for tough chewers. Might be too thick for my 6 lb girl
These are fun for the right dog, but not a good choice for all. They're a good size for medium dogs and some small dogs, but "small" is relative I guess and the size of this toy won't work for all small dogs. I definitely expected these to be smaller, though I measured and they are the size shown in the listing (for those in the US it's about 2 1/4" by 4 3/4"). I think one thing that surprised me is how tall (?) they are, or maybe thick? They show two measurements in the listing but not the other. That's the one that makes a big difference with small dogs, especially really small dogs like mine. I have a 6 lb Maltese with a teeny tiny mouth so I have to find toys that she can fit her teeny mouth around. She loves toys with nubbies and has other "spiky" toys like this, but so far hasn't been too interested and I wonder if it's because it's too thick. If she doesn't give them a try we have doggy friends who are big enough for them, more the 12-16 lb size. There was a bit of smell on them when I first opened the package, but after giving them a quick wash (which I do with all chew toys like this) the smell was completely gone. Whatever it was must have just been on the outside because it hasn't come back. I can't really say how durable these are, but I doubt they'd be good for tough chewers. They're not super soft but in the world of dog chewing they're medium at best. They're very cute and if you have a medium to soft chewer they could be a great addition to the toy basket. They also have a hole down the middle which could be filled with something to lick out, another way to keep them busy. Can't say any of this makes them worth the rather high price asked though.

Good for puppies!
I work with dog fosters and we recently got a new batch of puppies. These worked great for them, especially because they want to chew on everything!

Be careful, not for strong chewers
Sad to give a 1-star review on these bones, I had such high hopes. They’re a great size and design, and my dog was excited to get one when I gave it to her… until I happened to look down at her, having just given her the toy moments before, and she had chewed off a large chunk and was trying to ingest it! Fortunately I caught this and was able to get it out of her mouth before she swallowed it. My girl loves chewing on toys like this but I guess she’s too aggressive of a chewer for these(?) though she’s NEVER chewed a piece off of a toy before. Sadly this bone, and the remaining two in the bag, went in the trash.
