'Huancabamba' is a tall, stately, columnar cactus from Peru, said to be a Peruvian torch cactus (Trichocereus peruvianus). Closely related to — and possibly a hybrid with — the more well-known San Pedro cactus (Trichocereus pachanoi), both species have a long history of use as medicine and in spiritual/shamanistic practices. Like San Pedro, this species contains mescaline, the hallucinogenic substance that gives peyote its potency, though torch cactus contains far less mescaline than peyote and is legal to grow and possess. Huancabamba is a town in northern Peru, in the foothills of the Andes, and is widely considered a major spiritual center thanks to the presence of lagoons above the town that are regarded as sacred as well as the large number of traditional healers (curanderas & curanderos) who practice there.

Peruvian torch cacti are fast-growing (up to 18 inches per year) and can get very tall in the wild (up to nearly 20 feet!). They take well to container culture and can stand being overwatered more than most cacti. They are relatively frost hardy, able to withstand temperatures down to 26 degrees, but they are unlikely to be able to survive year-round below USDA Zone 9. Their white flowers are spectacularly beautiful.

We got our seed from our friends at Sheffield's Seed Company in Locke, NY, who report that it was grown in Florida. There are some questions online about whether or not the 'Huancabamba' strain of Peruvian torch cactus is actually a hybrid with San Pedro cactus (Trichocereus pachanoi), so it wouldn't be unexpected to find some diversity among the seedlings these seeds produce.

GROWING TIPS: Seeds are surprisingly easy to grow, needing no pre-treatment of any kind. They do require light to germinate, so they should be surface-sown. Keep moist until seedlings appear.

Fun for Pups and You Can Hide a Treat Inside!
These chew toys are fun for my pup! He especially loves that I can hide a treat inside, which keeps him interested and entertained. They’re a nice size for small dogs and puppies, and I also like the light colors because they’re easy to spot when they end up under the sofa because somehow they always do!

Cute toys but not for tough chewers. Might be too thick for my 6 lb girl
These are fun for the right dog, but not a good choice for all. They're a good size for medium dogs and some small dogs, but "small" is relative I guess and the size of this toy won't work for all small dogs. I definitely expected these to be smaller, though I measured and they are the size shown in the listing (for those in the US it's about 2 1/4" by 4 3/4"). I think one thing that surprised me is how tall (?) they are, or maybe thick? They show two measurements in the listing but not the other. That's the one that makes a big difference with small dogs, especially really small dogs like mine. I have a 6 lb Maltese with a teeny tiny mouth so I have to find toys that she can fit her teeny mouth around. She loves toys with nubbies and has other "spiky" toys like this, but so far hasn't been too interested and I wonder if it's because it's too thick. If she doesn't give them a try we have doggy friends who are big enough for them, more the 12-16 lb size. There was a bit of smell on them when I first opened the package, but after giving them a quick wash (which I do with all chew toys like this) the smell was completely gone. Whatever it was must have just been on the outside because it hasn't come back. I can't really say how durable these are, but I doubt they'd be good for tough chewers. They're not super soft but in the world of dog chewing they're medium at best. They're very cute and if you have a medium to soft chewer they could be a great addition to the toy basket. They also have a hole down the middle which could be filled with something to lick out, another way to keep them busy. Can't say any of this makes them worth the rather high price asked though.

Good for puppies!
I work with dog fosters and we recently got a new batch of puppies. These worked great for them, especially because they want to chew on everything!

Be careful, not for strong chewers
Sad to give a 1-star review on these bones, I had such high hopes. They’re a great size and design, and my dog was excited to get one when I gave it to her… until I happened to look down at her, having just given her the toy moments before, and she had chewed off a large chunk and was trying to ingest it! Fortunately I caught this and was able to get it out of her mouth before she swallowed it. My girl loves chewing on toys like this but I guess she’s too aggressive of a chewer for these(?) though she’s NEVER chewed a piece off of a toy before. Sadly this bone, and the remaining two in the bag, went in the trash.
