Enhance your outdoor living space with the Berri Basket® Appleblossom strawberry, a spectacular variety that merges floral elegance with gourmet delight. This everbearing strawberry stands out with its large, delicate soft pink double blooms, recalling the look of apple blossoms. Cultivate a visual and culinary feast on your terrace or balcony thanks to this vigorous plant, selected for its ability to produce sweet fruits continuously from June until the first frost.

Characteristics and Flavor Profile

  • Flavor and Texture: The fruits offer a perfect balance between sugar and acidity, with juicy flesh. Their aroma is intense, typical of traditional garden strawberries.
  • Ornamental Flowering: Unlike classic strawberries, Appleblossom produces double flowers (multiple rows of petals) that persist for a long time, creating a striking contrast with the lustrous dark green foliage.
  • Habit: Naturally compact and semi-trailing. It produces few runners (stolons), allowing it to concentrate its energy on flower and fruit production.
  • Fungal Diseases: Excellent natural resistance to leaf spot and powdery mildew.
  • Fruit Health: In pots, the fruits never touch the ground, keeping them clean, healthy, and reducing the risk of grey mold (Botrytis).
  • Hardiness: Excellent cold resistance. It handles temperature fluctuations well, provided that soil moisture remains stable.

Use: Beauty and Productivity

  • Hanging Baskets and Planters: This is its primary use. Its cascading habit allows the fruits to hang outside the pot, making "arm's length" picking easy on the balcony or terrace.
  • Edible Landscaping: Use it to punctuate your flower beds. Its pink flowers make it an excellent companion for annuals while offering snacks at your fingertips.
  • Consumption: Perfect for fresh consumption, decorating cakes, or enhancing summer salads. Its beauty makes it a top choice for refined garnishes.

Soil and Exposure

  • Soil Type: Prefers soil rich in organic matter, loose, and above all well-drained. A slightly acidic pH (between 5.5 and 6.5) is ideal.
  • Exposure: Full sun (minimum 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day). Abundant light is necessary to maintain the pink coloration of the flowers and the sugar content of the berries.

Maintenance and Fertilization

  • Watering: Maintain constant moisture without waterlogging the soil. In hanging baskets, daily watering is often required in hot weather to prevent flower buds from wilting.
  • Fertilization: To support its double flowering and continuous fruiting, apply a fertilizer rich in potassium and phosphorus (5-10-15 type) every two weeks.
  • Pruning: Remove dry or damaged leaves. If the plant becomes too crowded, trim a few runners to focus energy on the fruits.
  • Planting: Space plants about 30 cm apart. In containers, ensure the pot has adequate drainage holes.
  • Winter Protection: In pots, move the container to a protected area or bury it and cover with mulch to protect the roots from severe frost.

Best book for beginners to learn safe practices in single pitch climbing
Format: Paperback
Great book for beginner climbers, especially those who want to set up top ropes. Goes over anchor setup, knots, gear placement, belaying, rappelling, etc. Lots of good photos. Very easy to read, don’t be put off by the description as a “manual”, and worth reading to learn how to do things safely. It’s definitely not just for those who want to guide or take AMGA courses. If you are debating getting this book or “Top roping” by the same author, get this one, as it contains 100% of the content in the other book (much of the exact same text and photos) and more, and is just as easy to read. In fact, this has a ton of overlap (and many of the same photos) with “Climbing Anchors” which the author co-authored, but is more accessible and spans a wider range of content. If you are the “leader” of your beginner climbing friends or even if you have some experience but want to take a beginner climbing outside, this is a must read.

Perfect reference guide
Format: Paperback
I bought this book to supplement my lessons with an AMGA guide to learn how to set up toprope climbs. I used it many times to practice and reinforce everything I learned. It is really well written and my favorite book in terms of the knowledge contained within. As common sense would dictate this is not a book to teach your how to toprope...it is a reference to what you have learned?

Essential To Read Before the Class
Format: Paperback
This book provides a good overview of what you'll need to know for your AMGA Single Pitch Instructor (SPI) course and assessment. If you plan to take that course this book is a no-brainer. You just have to buy it and read it. There are a few shortcomings: * The photos of how to tie the knots skip a lot and it is impossible to learn the knots from the book. * The photos of what not to do should be clearly labeled with a red cross bar or WRONG overlay on the photo. If you flip causally through the book and look at the photos some very wrong stuff is there and you have to read the text to know that it is not recommended. * The religious debate on anchor systems rages on. Should you set up a Joshua Tree System with Tether or a Backside System? I realize the AMGA doesn't want to pick sides and will say either is acceptable, but the book doesn't even try to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various anchor systems.
