Burkwoodii Scotch Broom (Cytisus scoparius 'Burkwoodii')

Burkwoodii Scotch Broom brings vivid late-spring color to sunny landscapes with masses of ruby red, pea-like flowers that show warm yellow highlights. This fast-growing shrub fills space quickly, making it useful when you want strong impact and quick coverage without a long wait. It performs best in lean, well-drained soils and handles heat and dry conditions once established, which helps reduce maintenance in challenging spots. The overall look is airy and bright, with green stems that keep the plant visually present even when not in bloom.

Distinctive Features

This selection is prized for its heavy flower display in late spring, when the arching stems can be lined with red blooms that read richly from a distance. The foliage is small and sparse, letting the flower color take center stage and giving the plant a fine-textured, twiggy look. It forms a rounded to upright, slightly arching shrub that typically matures about 4 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide, depending on site and pruning. After flowering, small pods may form, and light post-bloom shaping helps keep the plant dense and tidy.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun is best for dense growth and the strongest flowering.
  • Soil: Plant in well-drained soil, including sandy or gravelly sites, and avoid heavy clay or consistently wet ground.
  • Water: Water regularly the first season, then provide occasional deep watering during extended drought once established.
  • USDA Zones: Hardy in zones 5 to 8.
  • Mature Size: About 4 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide.
  • Habit: Rounded to upright shrub with arching green stems and fine texture.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use as a focal point where the late-spring red bloom can pop against evergreens, stone, or darker shrubs.
  • Sunny Slopes: Plant on hot, sunny slopes where sharp drainage and drought tolerance matter.
  • Mixed Shrub Borders: Tuck into borders to add a strong spring peak and fine texture between broader-leaved plants.
  • Informal Screening: Use in loose groupings to create quick, airy coverage in open sunny areas.
  • Coastal and Windy Sites: Place in exposed locations with good drainage where many shrubs struggle to establish.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Pruning: Prune lightly right after flowering to shape and encourage dense growth, and avoid cutting back into old, leafless wood.
  • Watering: Keep soil on the drier side once established and avoid frequent shallow watering.
  • Fertilizing: Avoid heavy feeding, since overly rich soil can reduce flowering and make growth floppy.
  • Mulching: Use a light mulch layer to limit weeds while keeping mulch off the crown and stems.
  • Drainage: Prioritize excellent drainage to reduce the risk of root problems in winter and wet periods.

Why Choose Burkwoodii Scotch Broom?

  • Bold Spring Color: Ruby red flowers with warm highlights deliver standout color when many shrubs are still green.
  • Fast Coverage: Vigorous growth helps you fill space and create presence quickly.
  • Heat and Drought Tolerance: Handles sun and dry conditions well once established in well-drained soil.
  • Fine Texture: Slender green stems and light foliage add airy contrast in mixed plantings.
  • Low Input Planting: Performs best in lean soils, which can simplify care in tough sites.

If you need a high-impact shrub for full sun and sharp drainage, Burkwoodii Scotch Broom delivers strong seasonal color and quick landscape results. Give it space, keep the soil on the lean side, and shape it right after flowering for the best long-term form. Used as an accent or in repeating groups, it creates a bright, finished look that reads clearly from a distance.

Shipped quickly and as described
It was what I expected as functionality, lightweight and easy to move about. I plan to use it in my enclosed patio to obscure weight bench and wts. My only complaint is that the bamboo cover on one edge is not secure. But I will probably use a magic marker to cover the natural back that is showing. I don’t have time to return it as my event is coming soon.

Good product, needs double hinges for versatility.
Size: 6 Panel, Color: Brown
Blocks out all the light, looks good, good color. Only con is that it is not double hinged so it is hard to position the extra panels because I bout 6 panels instead of the 4 I usually get. Good deal, very decent price with the free delivery. Very clean packaging, came in great shape, no smell or odor from the factory.

Very Pleased with Room Divider
Size: 4 Panel, Color: Brown
This room divider is even better than I expected. It's sturdy but is lightweight enough that I could get the box up a flight of stairs with no problem whatsoever. It folds and unfolds easily and is very easy to move. And there's no assembly required! It really is woven and is quite attractive. The main reason I chose this item was price (although I did like the way it looked) and I got more for my money than I thought I would.

Works well
Size: 4 Panel, Color: Coal Black
i bought this for 3 reasons. 1. Privacy when changing so I don't have to lock dog out of room. 2. In case MIL comes over and wants to snoop. She won't be able to see my bedroom. 3. A nice backdrop to use when taking photos of the clothing I make. This is perfect for me. My only "complaint" is that it is not the most sturdy thing. I have to finagle it in a way that keeps it from falling over. But for the price, it can't be beat!

Cheap and unstable
Size: 4 Panel, Color: Black, Size: 4 Panel, Color: Black
Although this has nothing to do with the product, it arrived a day later than previously stated. Making me have to create a makeshift room divider the day it was actually needed. When the product arrived it arrived in a box that showed no evidence of damage. Once opened, divider was found inside a plastic cover. Great protector for dust or scratching. The divider was fully assembled so there was nothing for me to do but remove it from packaging and use it where needed. After further inspection the divider was not only cheap and flimsy looking it was absolutely unstable. It would wobble and appears to have been assembled in a rush making some panels crooked. I noted significant damage to the bottom portion of some of the panels both front and back. It does not feel like an item worth the price. The color is as advertised and the product had no smell. The sizing was accurate.
