Pansy seeds for the garden that has decided it deserves better than the garden centre allows. Pansies have faces, which is either charming or, depending on the variety's expression, somewhat unnerving.

Pansy is cool-season annual with distinctive patterned faces that bloom in spring and autumn when most other flowers have given up. Each packet is hermetically vacuum-sealed -- removing the oxygen that causes standard paper seed packets to lose germination viability within approximately one year. State law requires a 3-year viability label on sealed packaging. NASA research on hermetic seed storage indicates viability of up to 10 years under proper conditions. Every packet is non-GMO and germination-tested at independent third-party labs before it earns its Japanese woodblock print artwork.

How to Grow Pansy from Seed

Sowing and Germination

Sow indoors 10-12 weeks before last frost. Needs darkness to germinate -- cover seeds.

Care and Harvest

Cool-season annual. Deadhead regularly. Blooms spring and autumn. Edible flowers.

Why Vacuum-Sealed Seeds Last Longer

Standard paper seed packets are permeable to oxygen and moisture -- the two primary causes of seed degradation. Most paper-packaged seeds begin losing germination viability after approximately one year, contributing to significant garden-industry waste: packets purchased, not planted, expired, discarded. Shido Seeds are hermetically vacuum-sealed. The packet does not expire quietly in a drawer. It waits.

About the Packaging

Every Shido seed packet is illustrated in the style of Japanese 1910s woodblock printing -- designed and drawn in-house by Chive, the Toronto ceramics studio that has been exhibiting at the Chelsea Flower Show in London every year and does not, as a matter of principle, sell to big-box retailers. Customers collect the packets as a series. This was not the original plan.

Made Puppy Sick!
Color: Blue, Color: Blue
Fell apart fast, my pup tore pieces off and it made him sick. I really wanted these to work because they are so cute as "baby" toys for puppies and the listing promises “durable & chew‑resistant” toys that can stand up to sharp puppy teeth and even says they’re safe for extended chewing with no health risks because they’re made from “100% natural rubber” with no BPA or harmful chemicals. Unfortunately, that wasn’t my experience at all. My pup had these for only a short time before he chewed pieces off, and the toys started breaking apart way faster than expected. After swallowing some of the pieces, he ended up sick to his stomach, which meant the toys had to go straight in the trash. He was up all night with diarrhea and vomiting, at first, I didn't put it together until I found blue pieces of the rubber toy in his vomit.

good toys but better for gentle / non aggressive teethers
Color: Blue
cute but not very durable. better for dogs who are not aggressive chewers even though they are young pups. when they are broken apart by teeth, the pieces are at least clean cuts. no big concerns of ingestion

Cute set for my 2-1/2 pound chihuahua puppy, and this set would also make a great gift
Color: Pink, Color: Pink
First off, I like how each piece is individually wrapped and then placed all together in a plastic bag. While it's not in a gift box, I feel like this would still make a really cute gift (that shows up in good shape, too.) For the current price of under ten bucks, this feels like a really great value for five cute toys. My chihuahua puppy is only 2-1/2 pounds, so some of these are a bit larger for her, but that's to be expected at her tiny size, and it doesn't stop her from enjoying them. These feel really sturdy to me for smaller dogs to chew on. I personally love the added "ribbons" because I think they're adorable and because my dog loves things like that. They really get her to engage with toys even more. while also giving me another way to interact with them more as I play with her. I could see how those fabric pieces may wear down over time for a larger dog, but I think it depends on how much a dog focuses on chewing on those pieces. Fortunately, the plastic toys will still be cute without those fabric pieces if anything happens to them. Unfortunately, the plastic pieces have a very slight odor. I'm super sensitive to smells, so you may not notice it at all. It's certainly not as bad as so many other plastic items, and it came right off when I washed it in dish soap (which I would do before giving these to my pup anyways.) I hope your small dog enjoys these as much as we do, and I hope you find this review helpful!

My dog wasn’t interested in these
Color: Pink
I have a 10 pound adult Maltese/Yorkie mix and she was not interested in these toys at all. They are solid construction and very firm. They have lots of bumps, humps and ridges that would likely feel good to a teething puppy. They look great but I’m not sure why they put ribbons on some of them. The ribbons would be quickly shredded with a game of tug-o-war with my dog. I deducted one point for usefulness.
