Native nut. Wildlife magnet. The most productive edible shrub in the eastern forest.

Corylus americana, the American Hazelnut, is the native nut shrub that every food forester, wildlife manager, and habitat gardener should be growing. It produces clusters of small, sweet hazelnuts that ripen in late summer, establishing faster than any nut tree and beginning to fruit in as little as three to five years from seed. It tolerates shade, poor soils, wet sites, and dry hillsides with the same easy reliability and spreads naturally by root suckers to form dense, productive thickets that provide nesting cover and food for dozens of wildlife species. Squirrels, deer, turkeys, grouse, and over 20 bird species rely on American Hazelnut for food. If you are looking to buy American Hazelnut seeds or grow this native nut shrub from seed, nothing else produces edible nuts this quickly and this reliably in the eastern United States.

  • Begins producing edible hazelnuts within 3 to 5 years of planting, faster than any nut tree
  • Spreads by root suckers to form dense wildlife thickets providing cover and food
  • Tolerates shade, poor soils, wet sites, and dry slopes with exceptional adaptability
  • Native across the eastern United States and Great Lakes region, extremely cold-hardy to zone 4
  • Catkins provide one of the earliest pollen sources of spring for native bees emerging from winter dormancy

Things you probably did not know about the American Hazelnut

Indigenous peoples selected and managed hazelnut groves for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence from sites across the eastern United States shows hazelnut shells in abundance, indicating that hazelnuts were a major caloric food source in pre-contact North America. Many Native American communities actively managed hazelnut thickets by burning them on rotation to encourage vigorous new growth and higher nut production. The hazelnuts were eaten fresh, dried for winter storage, and ground into a flour used in soups and porridges.

The catkins open before any leaves emerge and before most insects are active. American Hazelnut is wind-pollinated, releasing pollen from its dangling catkins in late winter and early spring when temperatures barely rise above freezing. The tiny, bright red female flowers that receive the pollen are almost invisible to the naked eye. The entire pollination event happens in a few weeks before most gardeners notice anything is happening.

A single hazelnut provides more energy per gram than a handful of blueberries. Hazelnuts are roughly 60 percent fat, primarily heart-healthy oleic acid, and contain significant protein, Vitamin E, and B vitamins. They are among the most calorie-dense whole foods produced by any native plant, which is why wildlife compete for them so intensively in the weeks before they ripen.

It can be coppiced for wildlife cover and increased nut production. American Hazelnut cut to the ground re-sprouts vigorously within a single season, producing dense multi-stemmed regrowth that provides superior nesting cover for ground-nesting birds. Coppicing on a 5 to 10 year rotation cycle also tends to increase nut production on the regrowth compared to older stems. This management technique was used by Indigenous peoples across its range for exactly this reason.

Been working well for over a year
Had this for over a year now and no real issues. The only issue I can think of is that if something is a bit too close to the scale, the scale can fluctuate a bit by a gram or so. Just make sure nothing is touching it, especially anything electronic. Beyond that, it's a no-nonsense scale that works great with actual tactile buttons. Its refresh rate can lag behind a tiny bit, but you get used to it by stopping your pours in anticipation. For example, I typically do 300mL pours in total, and I usually start slowing down/stopping at around 280g. Battery life is pretty good, but the battery life indicator doesn't do a good job of letting you know when you need to replace the batteries. So you may end up with it powering off mid-brew, but I've only had to replace the batteries once despite daily use over the past year or so. That being said, it's useful to also do stuff like the 4:6 method based on water level vs timer too. I'd also say it may not be extremely accurate as sometimes it fluctuates by .1 grams, but it is accurate enough for practical purposes. For reference, .1g is simply ~1 coffee bean, and unless you're an espresso perfectionist, 1 coffee bean isn't going to make any real difference. In summary: + Just the essentials if you only want the essentials + Tactile buttons + Display is pretty nice + Accurate enough for practical purposes + Battery life very good + Will work for at least a year, can't say any longer until I own it for longer + Great for the cost = WIll not refresh weight as quickly as say an acacia scale which costs at least four times as much, easy to compensate for - Battery life indicator isn't great, so it may power off mid-brew every half year or so - Sensitive to adjacent electronic devices, 1 or 2 inches is enough distance - Sensitive to adjacent objects, be mindful of anything that is touching the silicone, even if it's barely touching by a hair

Works Perfectly, Ignore "Drift" Reviews
Color: Onyx Black, Color: Onyx Black
I'm very happy with the accuracy and refresh rate of the scale. The two tone LED color scheme is a nice touch. I also like that the silicone cover is well-affixed to the scale and won't slide around. I only wish the scale came in white! Don't be fooled by other reviews. This scale doesn't "drift" any more or less than any other scale. Those people who say otherwise are likely storing it in a very different temperature environment than their use area. See photos for the test I did with boiling hot water in an uninsulated carafe. 0.0g drift on all tests, with or without the silicone protector, after several minutes of letting the carafe sit on the scale surface. The only time I experienced measurement drift was when I got the package from 30F freezing outdoor conditions, unboxed it and tried it out without letting the scale warm up to ambient. The measured weight slowly dropped until it warmed up to 70F room temp; since then it's been rock solid. That is totally normal for any scale that any manufacturer, cheap or expensive, makes. It's just how this kind of scale works. Overall if you're looking for a nice scale with timer functionality, I highly recommend the Greater Goods scale.

Precise and durable
Color: Birch
Best coffee scale for the price. No crazy features which makes it very easy to use. Small enough to store in a drawer and durable enough to not worry about it breaking. Scale is very precise which makes it great for V60 and Chemex

Great Coffee Scale
Color: Onyx Black, Color: Onyx Black
Absolutely love this coffee scale! For starters it was so well packaged. It is definitely worth what you pay for it. It has a silicon removable mat that fits snugly over the top of the scale. That makes it easy to pop it off to clean if you spill on it. The scale responds instantly to changes in weight which helps to give you accurate pour over results every single time. The scale also includes a built-in timer with a count-up or down control. It also has an auto shutoff but gives you plenty of time before it shuts off. There are multiple units to choose from when measuring. Overall just a really great scale and I'm so glad I purchased it!

great scale (read tips for its super sensitivity)
Color: Onyx Black, Color: Onyx Black
in hopes this will help anyone else who bought this scale- this thing is super sensitive to vibrations. if your scale is getting off calibration for seemingly no reason, make sure the sides and the back aren’t touching anything else and that the bottom is on a flat surface and it will fix it entirely, trust me!! but aside from that, this scale works absolutely perfectly. it’s just the right size for my morning coffee, has great battery life, and is really straightforward to use. plus the silicone top makes it really easy to clean and looks nice on my countertop. the timer is super convenient for making coffee, this is an amazing scale for this price point
