The Sprengeri Fern (or Sprenger's Asparagus), Asparagus aethiopicus, is a dense, trailing plant with a fountain-like growth habit, making it a popular choice for hanging baskets. Though often called a fern, it is actually a member of the lily family.
Native to northern South America and parts of Southern Africa, it has become a widely used ornamental plant globally. Its foliage consists of bright green, needle-like leaves (or cladodes) that grow densely and sporadically along long, trailing stems, which feature small, sharp spines.
The Sprengeri Fern does produce small, delicate, white or pale pink flowers that are mildly fragrant. Following the flowers, the plant develops small, attractive red berries (fruit).
-
Bright, Indirect Light. It can tolerate a few hours of direct morning sun, but intense, hot afternoon sun should be avoided. It can also adapt to medium light.
Keep the soil consistently moist during the growing season (spring/summer). Allow the top few inches of soil to dry out before watering again. Be cautious not to let it sit in soggy soil.
Rich, well-draining potting mix. A standard all-purpose potting mix works well.
Warm. Prefers temperatures between 65°F – 75°F (18°C – 24°C). Protect it from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F (13°C).
This plant should be fertilized once per month during the growing season (spring/summer) with a diluted houseplant fertilizer.
Toxic. The berries are considered toxic if ingested, and contact with the sap can cause skin irritation (dermatitis) in sensitive individuals. It is not pet-friendly and should be kept away from children and pets.
-
It can be grown outdoors as a perennial in USDA Hardiness Zones 9–11.
