Summary

A late-season summer-bearing raspberry bred to fill the harvest gap between early summer and fall varieties.

Rubus 'Encore' was developed by the Cornell University Small Fruit Breeding Program and released in 1980 from a cross of Canby and Cherokee. Bred to ripen later in the summer-bearing window, Encore fills an important role for gardeners who want to extend fresh raspberry picking into late July and early August before everbearing varieties begin.

In late spring, the plants produce white blossoms that attract pollinators and develop into large, firm, bright red berries. The fruit has a balanced sweet flavor with enough depth to stand out in fresh eating, freezing, and preserves. The nearly thornless, erect canes are vigorous and productive, making Encore one of the more manageable raspberry varieties in the garden.

Encore also shows moderate tolerance to phytophthora root rot, giving it an edge in gardens where drainage is less than perfect.

Care

Encore Raspberry Care

Plant in full sun for the best berry production. Raspberry plants perform best with at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight each day.

Provide fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture during the growing season. While Encore shows some tolerance to root rot, good drainage is still important. Mulching with organic material helps conserve moisture and reduce weed competition.

Encore is a summer-bearing (floricane) variety, producing fruit on second-year canes. After harvest, remove the spent fruiting canes at ground level and allow new first-year canes to develop for the following season. Thin canes during late winter to maintain good airflow and strong production.

If desired, apply a light feeding of slow release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy cane development and fruit production.

Additional Information

What are some common names for this plant?

This plant is commonly known as Encore raspberry or Encore red raspberry.

What makes Encore different from other raspberry varieties?

Encore was bred at Cornell to ripen later in the summer-bearing season, bridging the gap between early summer raspberries and fall everbearing types. Its nearly thornless canes, large fruit, and moderate root rot tolerance distinguish it from older varieties.

Is Encore a summer-bearing or everbearing raspberry?

Encore is a summer-bearing (floricane-fruiting) raspberry. It produces fruit on second-year canes, with the harvest arriving in late July to early August in most climates.

Do Encore raspberry plants spread?

Raspberry plants naturally produce new canes from their roots, gradually expanding into productive berry patches if space allows. Regular management of suckers helps keep the planting tidy.

Where do Encore raspberries fit best in the landscape?

Encore raspberries work well in berry gardens, kitchen gardens, and edible landscapes. Explore more fruit-producing plants in our Berries and Fruit & Vegetable Plants collections.

Piece of Junk
Style: ET-5150, Set: ET PRO FAX/ADF/PRINT/COPY/SCAN
This printer worked fine until about a week ago. It jammed six paper jambs in a row, and then it did not recognize the 8.5x11 paper that I had been using from day one. The copy feeder on top of the printer quit, and when it did work, it fed the copy in almost sideways. I have a box of ink for this copier, and I would like to shove it back to the supplier for the wonder piece BS equipment. I have bought a black ink cartage for my nearly 8-year-old Brother Copier and my office is back in business. Epson ECOTANK Pro ET-5150 is not ready for prime time by a cartage machine.

Great printer, save money on ink; Most issues are very easy to fix
Style: ET-5150, Set: ET PRO FAX/ADF/PRINT/COPY/SCAN
I convinced my boss to buy my first 5150 about 3 years ago and our second one earlier this year. I am happy with my purchase. I have barely had to swap out the maintenance box, and they are cheap anyways. The print quality is quite good, just need to run some cleaning protocols to fix most of them. We did have to open up a printer for some deeper cleaning but there were videos online to fix it. The most common issue is paper jams, but I print a lot and its pretty rare if the paper isn't janky. You can also easily fix by pulling the printer forward and taking off a panel in the back to fish out paper.

Good value
Style: ET-5150, Set: ET PRO FAX/ADF/PRINT/COPY/SCAN
I think 3.5 would be about right. I had a Canon color laser printer that I loved! The problem was that after 6 years it started to need name brand toner at $45/each. I decided to co for something that would print cheaper, because it turns out I don't print as much as I used to, so having a commercial printer is no needed. I like the tanks a lot and they are super easy to fill. The first fill does not use a whole bottle, but then it settles and the next day you can top off the tanks with the rest of the bottle. The print quality is good. I have printed a few hundred pages and it is working as it should, and the tanks don't seem to have dropped but a touch. Much cheaper than toner for sure. The weird thing is that when you scan, it does not know that there is paper in the feeder, so you hear the flat bed scanner run first, and then the tray starts feeding. Also, it prints on both sides, but it does not scan both sides automatically with the feeder, you have to flip each sheet. This is a serious bummer for me as I do a lot of 2-sided scanner. So far so good. If things go south I will revise.

18 months and going strong

Edit 1/18/26: 2 years in, and I just topped off the ink. I used the extra bottle of black that came with it, and bought a set of color ink for the first time. Love it. Original: I’ve had this printer for 18 months and love it. I haven’t even had to refill the ink yet! I print a fair amount, not constantly, but I homeschool and print things for church and scouts also. I’m able to connect easily from my Windows laptop, Mac desktop, and iPhone. Automatic double sided printing is great. Color printing is good quality. Printing on card stock can get jammed, but there’s a rear bypass for that. It’s annoying that you have to do a single sheet at a time, but oh well. Copying and scanning is handy.
