Royal Poinciana tree is a particularly good choice for those looking to create a beautiful bonsai. It is known for its beautiful, vibrant flowers that can add a lot of visual interest to your bonsai display. The Flamboyant is endemic to Madagascar where it is found in dry deciduous forests and it is endangered in the wild but is widely cultivated in East Africa and tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world.

Whether grown as a bonsai or tree planted in open soil, Delonix regia, commonly known as Royal Poinciana, Flamboyant or Flame Tree puts on its riotous show over a long season in spring and summer. Virtually everyone falls in love with this tree at first sight. It is so loved in Miami that they have an annual festival to celebrate its flowering. Delonix regia is one of the most noticeable flowering trees seen in the tropics. Bright fiery red/orange blossoms cover its Acacia-like leaves which close up at night. Delonix regia can be grown as a potted plant and makes a stunning bonsai.

Royal poinciana is drought tolerant, but does best with regular water in the growing
season and very little water in its dormant season. Seeds should be sown during spring. Soak the seeds in warm water overnight and sow the next morning into a seedling mix. Keep seedling tray moist but never water-logged

Germination Tip:

After soaking the seed overnight and the seed has not softened or swelled, you will need to scarify the seed coat. Scarifying is the process of weakening the seed coat, so that water and oxygen can enter the seed, in turn, kick starting germination. Seeds will remain  dormant if not exposed to these elements.

Scarifying can be achieved by gently rubbing the seed coat with sandpaper, you do not need to rub off the entire coating, just enough for water to enter. Another option is Knicking: Carefully nick the seed coat with a knife or nail clippers, particularly for larger seeds.

NB: Only scarify the seed coat, do not damage the internal parts of the seed.

Once Scarifying has been done. submerge the seed again as per instructions.
