Anthurium warocqueanum × waterburyanum

Long, narrow velvet leaves shape Anthurium warocqueanum × waterburyanum from the start. The blades develop a deep green surface, pale venation and a hanging growth direction that needs open space around and below the pot.

The cross combines the elongated foliage associated with Anthurium warocqueanum with the Ecuadorian Anthurium waterburyanum parent. Indoors, the plant should sit where new blades can open and harden without pressing against shelves, glass or nearby pots.

Long velvet leaf features

  • Elongated foliage: The leaves have a narrow, hanging shape with a soft velvet surface.
  • Pale vein pattern: Light veins run through the blade and become clearer as the leaf matures.
  • Downward leaf movement: The leaves need room below and around the pot as they lengthen.
  • Soft expanding blades: New leaves can crease or mark if they touch hard surfaces while unfurling.
  • Epiphytic root behaviour: Thick roots need a loose, airy substrate with steady but never stagnant moisture.
  • Space-sensitive growth: Open placement helps the long leaves expand without rubbing or folding against nearby surfaces.

Long-leaf growth and indoor placement

The leaf shape makes placement important. A shelf edge, plant stand or open bench can give the blades space to extend as they grow. If new leaves press against a wall or neighbouring plant, the soft velvet surface may crease before it has hardened.

The root zone should be open and oxygen-rich, similar to other velvet Anthurium with epiphytic tendencies. A heavy, compact mix keeps too much water around the roots and can weaken the crown before leaf symptoms become obvious.

Care for Anthurium warocqueanum × waterburyanum

  • Placement: Give the leaves physical space below the pot and avoid narrow shelves where new blades can press against hard surfaces.
  • Substrate: Choose a chunky Anthurium mix with bark, coarse mineral material and fibres that prevent the root zone from compacting.
  • Humidity: Higher humidity helps long new leaves unfurl without sticking, tearing or drying at the edges.
  • Water: Keep the substrate evenly moist but airy, with a slight dry-down at the top before the next watering.
  • Light: Use bright filtered light. Direct sun can scorch long velvet leaves and dry the tips.
  • Temperature: Keep the plant warm and protect it from cold drafts, cold water and cold wet substrate.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth and keep the root zone flushed if salts collect in the mix.

Problems with long velvet leaves

  • Creased new leaves: Long soft blades can crease if they rub against shelving, glass or other plants during expansion.
  • Brown tips and margins: Dry air, irregular moisture or root stress can brown the edges of the elongated leaves.
  • Loose crown: A wobbling base can point to root loss in a dense or overly wet mix.
  • Scorch marks: Strong sun can leave pale dry patches on the velvet surface.
  • Pests: Thrips, spider mites and mealybugs can hide along the midrib, petioles and undersides of long leaves.

Safety for Anthurium warocqueanum × waterburyanum

Anthurium is not safe for pets or children to chew. The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes after contact with sap or damaged tissue.

Botanical name background

The genus name Anthurium comes from Greek roots for “flower” and “tail”, referring to the spadix. Anthurium warocqueanum T.Moore was published in Florist and Pomologist in 1878 and is a Colombian epiphytic species.

Anthurium waterburyanum Croat & Scherber. was published in Aroideana 48(3):255 in 2025, in a revision of Anthurium section Cardiolonchium from Carchi Province, Ecuador.

Cool, Quiet Luxury for Your Face (and Your Hair Thanks You Too)
Color: 01 - Ivory, Size: Queen, Color: 01 - Ivory, Size: Queen
This is one of those products where you immediately understand the price the second you touch it. First off—this definitely IS real silk, not satin, which is important to verify (esp at this price point). There are so many listings on Amazon of bonnets and pillowcases, sheets etc claiming “silk” and when you get it, it’s satin. This pillowcase is 100% mulberry silk, and you can feel it immediately. What surprised me though is that I actually have other 100% mulberry silk items (my daughter’s play silks from Sarah’s Silks), and somehow this pillowcase feels way smoother and more luxurious than those. Same material on paper, totally different experience in real life. From what I can tell, it’s thicker and more tightly woven, which gives it that extra silky, almost glassy feel. It’s buttery smooth, lightweight, and has that cool-to-the-touch finish that’s honestly a dream in the Phoenix, AZ heat, where it’s already 105 in March. Getting into bed feels like flipping your pillow to the cold side… every time. 🧊 It fits a standard queen pillow perfectly (mine’s a thicker foam pillow and slid right in with zero struggle), and the hidden zipper is secure without being annoying. No bunching, no slipping off mid-sleep—just stays put. And it’s not just nice—it’s doing something. My hair definitely wakes up less chaotic, and it feels gentler on my skin overall. One of those quiet upgrades you don’t think about much… until you do. The ivory color is soft and clean-looking, very effortless luxury, and I like that there are other color options if you want to switch up the vibe. Yes, $60 for a pillowcase sounds a little wild—but this actually feels like a $60 pillowcase. Thick, high-quality, and genuinely luxurious, not pretending to be. If you’ve been on the fence, this is one of those small changes that makes your whole sleep setup feel elevated.

Beckham Hotel Collection 22 Momme Silk Pillowcase
Color: 04 - Cherry Pink, Size: Queen, Color: 04 - Cherry Pink, Size: Queen
This is a 100% Mulberry silk pillowcase (22 momme, 6A grade) in the Cherry Pink color, Queen size. Unboxing and Prep Out of the box, the silk had noticeable deep creases from being folded. I hand washed it and air dried it, but the wrinkles remained. I used a steam iron at approximately 300F with a flour sack towel as a pressing cloth to protect the fabric. It took two passes to get most of the wrinkles out, but the silk held its sheen well throughout the process. Zipper and Construction The zipper tracks are hidden behind a fabric flap so you don't feel the teeth. However, the zipper pull is not fully integrated or tucked away; it hangs free at the end of the track. The pull is small enough that it hasn't been an issue or gotten in the way during use, but it's worth noting it isn't completely "invisible." Fit and Quality The Cherry Pink is a very light, subtle shade. The 22 momme weight feels substantial and opaque. I paired this with a high-loft Sobel Westex Bellazure Duo (feather and down) pillow. The Queen size fits perfectly and the silk stays smooth and cool. Final Thoughts The build quality is solid and the Oeko-TEX certification is a nice touch. To get the best results, you really need to pair this with a high-quality, fluffy pillow to fill out the case properly. On a flat or low-density pillow, it wouldn't look or perform nearly as well. It requires some maintenance with the hand washing and ironing, but the feel is much better than thinner 19 momme options.

Luxuriously Soft & Cooling, But Needs a Wider Opening
Color: 03 - Champagne, Size: Queen, Color: 03 - Champagne, Size: Queen
I really enjoy sleeping on the Beckham Hotel Collection Silk Pillowcase—it has such a silky, smooth feel that makes a noticeable difference in comfort. It feels wonderful against the skin and hair, and I especially love how it helps keep my head cool throughout the night, which leads to a restful sleep. The color choices are also wonderful and look very rich, adding a nice elegant touch to the bed. It’s also held up nicely in the wash, which is always a plus for something this delicate. That said, I’m giving it 4 stars because of the zipper opening design. You lose about 4 inches of usable space at the opening, which makes it harder than expected to insert a pillow. Unlike other zippered pillowcases I own, the ends don’t open wide enough, so I had to squeeze my pillow in—and I actually noticed the stitching starting to pull a bit because of it. A wider opening would make a big difference. Overall, it’s great to sleep on and feels luxurious, but for the price, I do think the design could be improved.
