Issued by the USPS on May 23, 1988, these stamps commemorate the 200th anniversary of South Carolina becoming the 8th state of the United States. The image of the palm tree was chosen to represent the state's distinctive landscape. 

This stamp is part of a series honoring the 200th statehood anniversaries of the first 13 US states. The stamp design was created by renowned artist Bob Timberlake, who submitted three beautiful watercolor and gouache paintings. One featured the state flower (jasmine), another a live oak tree, and the third, three palmettos (the state tree) surrounded by sea oats. The palmettos were ultimately chosen for their instant recognition with South Carolina. 

The First Day ceremony for this stamp took place in the House of Representatives chamber of the South Carolina state capitol building in Columbia. This stamp is not only a tribute to the state's history, but also showcases its beautiful natural scenery.
