Alocasia wentii - Hardy Elephant Ear

Alocasia wentii, commonly known as Hardy Elephant Ear, is a beautiful tropical plant with glossy, heart-shaped leaves that have a deep green colour with a unique metallic sheen and purple undersides. Known for its hardiness and ability to tolerate cooler temperatures, this Alocasia variety adds an exotic touch to both indoor and outdoor spaces. Growing up to 1–1.5 meters in height, it creates a lush, architectural look that fits well in shaded garden beds or as an indoor specimen plant.

Position

Hardy Elephant Ear thrives in bright, indirect light to partial shade, making it ideal for shaded garden areas or bright indoor locations without direct sunlight. It is more tolerant of cooler conditions than other Alocasias, but still prefers warm, humid environments for optimal growth.

Growth

This Alocasia has a moderate growth rate, typically reaching a mature height of 1–1.5 meters with a spread of about 1 meter. Its dense, upright habit and uniquely coloured foliage make it a great addition for creating a tropical look in gardens or as a feature plant indoors.

Planting Guide

Alocasia wentii grows best in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil that retains moisture. For outdoor planting, choose a sheltered location with partial shade. Indoors, use a high-quality potting mix with good drainage. Plant in spring or early summer, positioning at soil level, water well, and apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain soil moisture.

Plant Care

Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogging, especially during the growing season. Hardy Elephant Ear benefits from high humidity, so misting the leaves or placing a humidifier nearby is recommended if grown indoors. Fertilise every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to support healthy growth. Prune any yellowing or damaged leaves to keep the plant looking its best.

Picky dog approved!

I have wasted so much money on dog balls that they won't even pick up! They finally were obsessed with the Kong rubber green/blue or red/blue ones, but they're $3+. each, and they break from the dogs squishing it. I honestly had zero expectations on these, and they BOTH picked them up on the first throw! That's huge!! Seem to work fine in the ChuckIt. As for the squeaker, at first I was like "Oh nooooo." when they both loudly started! Much to my (and my neighbors') happiness, the squeakers stopped working after a couple minutes. 🤣

Durable
Color: S6-muti-color
The balls are great for chewers. The squeaky didn’t last long but they are perfect for the ball launcher.

The squeeker isn't durable, but the balls themselves are.
Color: S6-muti-color, Color: S6-muti-color
I have two 70+lb, ball obsessed dogs (a field bred Golden Retriever, and an Old Time Scotch Collie), and these balls are living up to the abuse they're receiving. In the fall we always lose a ball or two in the yard due to getting lost in leaves or longer grass, so I always try and buy a multi pack at the start of the season, so went with these this year. I'm glad I did. Great price for a 6 pack, they fit the medium Chuck-It launcher (a little loosely, but they throw just fine), have great bounce, they FLOAT (which means I didn't lose any at the beach), and they're super durable to the dreaded "mouth squish." The squeaker dies pretty quick, like, within a day, but it isn't the kind that can fall out or choke your dog, so no worries there. The boys are happy, I'm happy, my wallet is happy - I've already ordered another pack.
