Calathea ‘White Fusion’ is one of the most striking variegated prayer plants available. A cultivar of Calathea lietzei (often reclassified within Goeppertia), it features dramatic swirls of white, cream and soft green across elongated leaves, with a rich purple underside.

Each leaf looks hand-painted, blending cool tones into an elegant marbled pattern. Like other Calatheas, it gently raises and lowers its leaves throughout the day in response to light — a movement known as nyctinasty, which gives rise to the name “prayer plant”.

While undeniably beautiful, ‘White Fusion’ prefers consistent conditions and slightly more attentive care.

Key Features

  • 🌿 White and cream marbled variegation

  • 🌿 Soft green patterning

  • 🌿 Deep purple leaf undersides

  • 🌿 Elegant elongated foliage

  • 🌿 Prayer plant leaf movement

Care Guide

Light

Bright, indirect light is essential.

  • East-facing windows are ideal

  • Avoid direct sun — white areas scorch easily

  • Too little light may dull variegation

Filtered light keeps colours crisp and balanced.

Watering

Calathea ‘White Fusion’ prefers consistently moist (but not soggy) soil.

  • Water when the top 2–3cm feels slightly dry

  • Do not allow the soil to completely dry out

  • Reduce watering in winter

Important:

  • Use room-temperature water

  • Rainwater or filtered water is best (sensitive to tap water minerals)

  • Ensure good drainage

Overwatering can cause root rot; underwatering causes leaf curl and browning.

Humidity

High humidity is crucial.

  • Ideal range: 60–80%

  • Highly benefits from a humidifier

  • Excellent choice for plant cabinets or bathrooms

Low humidity commonly causes:

  • Brown crispy edges

  • Curling leaves

  • Splitting on pale areas

Temperature

  • Ideal: 18–26°C

  • Avoid temperatures below 16°C

  • Keep away from draughts and heating vents

Calatheas dislike sudden environmental changes.

Soil & Potting Mix

Use a moisture-retentive yet well-draining mix:

  • Peat-free houseplant compost

  • Perlite

  • Coco coir or fine bark

The goal is lightly moist soil with good aeration.

Feeding

Feed during spring and summer:

  • Balanced liquid fertiliser every 4 weeks

  • Use half-strength dilution

  • Do not feed during winter dormancy

Overfeeding can cause leaf tip burn.

Growth Habit

  • Compact, bushy form

  • Typically grows 30–50cm tall

  • New leaves emerge rolled from the centre

Leaves naturally move throughout the day, folding slightly at night.

Common Problems

Brown leaf edges

  • Low humidity

  • Tap water sensitivity

Leaf curling

  • Underwatering

  • Dry air

Yellowing leaves

  • Overwatering

Fading variegation

  • Insufficient light

Calathea ‘White Fusion’ is sometimes considered “high maintenance”, but stable warmth, humidity and consistent watering usually keep it thriving.

Styling Ideas

  • Beautiful in minimalist or Scandinavian interiors

  • Pair with darker foliage plants for contrast

  • Ideal for bright bathrooms or humid rooms

  • Looks elegant in neutral ceramic planters

Toxicity

Calatheas are generally considered non-toxic to pets, making them a safer option for households with cats and dogs.

Perfect for HEAVY chewers
Color: Onyx Black - Most Durable
My dog is a heavy chewer. Destroys everything that’s not very hard rubber, hard plastic, or hard material. He LOVES this ball. I think it’s his favorite. Plus, it bounces great so you can play with your dog. Very well constructed- probably indestructible or will at least last a very long time. Easily worth the money.

The only toy my dogs can’t destroy and love
Color: Onyx Black - Most Durable
I am thrilled to have found one toy my dogs don’t destroy immediately. They have torn up Fenrir hammers, the black kongs of all sizes, the monster k9 stick, nylabones, and they don’t like the goughnut at all (it stinks like a bad tire). This is the first one they both love and haven’t been able to destroy immediately. It does allow little tooth marks, but that’s what makes it fun for them. They are very happy playing with it and I’d say this one was worth every dollar. Update Months Later: We’ve gone through 2/3 now. I got two initially, and one has lasted long term. They still haven’t completely destroyed it. They did destroy a second one quickly so I suspect a flaw in it. They sent me a new one and they took a while, but they did destroy the third to the point we had to throw it away. Despite that, one still remains and our dogs still love it. It’s still the best for the money compared to others. We have two Bully XL’s that are each close to 100 pounds.

Indestructible
Color: Onyx Black - Most Durable
This is actually indestrutible! Be careful though, it's wicked hard/heavy. It isn't a ball you want banging into things. Use outside!!

Not indestructible, but the best I’ve found
Color: Onyx Black - Most Durable, Color: Onyx Black - Most Durable
This thing is unexpectedly heavy for its size. My 18 month old Giant Schnauzer is obsessed with fetch but destroys every ball she gets. The other brands marketed for extreme chewers tend to last about a day or two before they’re totally shredded. She’s had this one for about 2 weeks and it’s looking rough, but still holding together for the most part. I appreciate that as it comes apart it does so in little pieces rather than large chunks. While it’s far from indestructible, it’s the strongest I’ve found so far.
