Large and heart shaped, the matte green leaves have prominent bluish-purple veins; undulating bluish purple margins; and semi-glossy, burgundy-colored stems when mature. Occasionally, it may produce yellowish green flowers (spathes), but they are usually hidden by the leaves and are not particularly showy.

A Colocasia esculenta species, commonly known as elephant ear or taro, Blue Hawaii is a tuberous, frost-sensitive perennial (Zones 8-12), featuring a tidy, upright, and clumping growth habit. This makes it a great choice for container gardens and can be grown in doors in a bright, sunny space. It's also a striking addition to pond margins and rain gardens.
