Botanical Name: Lavandula dentata

French Lavender is a small, dense evergreen shrub, growing to 1 by 1 meter. It has toothed grey-green leaves held on upright branches, but is woody at the base. The sticky, aromatic leaves are about 3 cm long and borne in rosettes up the woody stem. The synonym ‘Fringed Lavender’ comes from the small serrations in the leaves. The violet-blue flowers are held on slender grey stems and surrounded by papery bract of a similar colour. Lavandula dentata flowers for most of the year in Australia and is a very good bee and butterfly attractant.

Lavender is a much loved garden plant with a long history and many modern cultivars. The Lavandula genus belongs to the Laminaceae family, which is also known as the mint family. It has over 3500 species, from more than 180 genera, distributed across the globe. Lavandula dentata was given its current name by Linnaeus in 1753. Prior to this it was named Stoechas secunda in 1576 by Carolus Clusius, a Flemish doctor. Although this lavender had been known across the Arab world for many centuries Clusius was the first European to discover the plant in his travels to Gibraltar. The name Stoechas dentata may also be used as a synonym referring specifically to the name Fringed Lavender.

The natural habitat of most lavender species is characterised by dry, rocky or poor soil and low water conditions. French Lavender is generally more heat tolerant, although, both French and English lavender are from Mediterranean regions. French Lavender is a significant scrub and understorey plant in forested areas and is native to southern and eastern Spain, Gibraltar, Balearic Islands, north western Africa, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Israel, Jordan and the Arabian Peninsula. It is naturalised in the Mediterranean, California, New Zealand and Western Australia.

Lavender use has been recorded since ancient times, with uses as varied as early cleansers and perfumes, medicinal headache treatments in the Renaissance Period, and even as an insect repellent. The name ‘lavender’ is derived from the word ‘lavare’ which means ‘to wash’. This reflects the early use of lavender plants in bath houses throughout Ancient Greece and Roman culture. Lavender was also spread around the floors and streets during the Middle Ages, to mask bad household odours and the stench from the streets. Today, there is a growing industry providing lavender oil for aromatherapy, cosmetics and cleansers.

Lavender is a multi-purpose garden plant with great potential, although most people are happy to grow it just for the ornamental value. Each variety is distinctive and may have different properties. For further information please check our other lavender plant listings.

Growing Conditions

As with most lavender species, L. dentata requires good drainage. In clay soils it is best to create a raised bed, perhaps in a rockery. Fertile, normal or sandy soil will produce good results. Container growing will also be successful, offering protection from frost and for managing difficult soil. Full sun is ideal, although part shade is also acceptable. French Lavender is very tolerant of hot, dry conditions and requires hot summers to grow well. It has low to average water requirements once established. This species does handle some humidity, but wet and humid summers may present a problem. Cold winters may damage the lavender plant, so planting in a protected position may be advised.

Many evolved with a requirement for high calcium and magnesium and this is commonly present in the natural environment. This lavender will tolerate lime, but does not like acidic soils. Garden lavender plants may need supplements to grow well. The fragrance is said to be stronger in chalky soils. Pruning of dead flowers is recommended, together with a light trim towards the end of the flowering period. In early spring the plants can be cut back quite hard to promote new growth. Plants can get straggly and become woody, so replacing them every 5-6 years is recommended. Propagation may be in spring or autumn with soft wood cuttings.

Medicinal Uses

Lavandula dentata has been used in traditional medicine for relieving headaches, rheumatism, to create vapour for treating colds and flu, and the oil is used in aromatherapy. Place leaves and flowers in boiling water to create steam and an aromatic vapour to treat respiratory conditions.

Culinary Uses

As a culinary herb lavender is used to add colour and flavour to sugar used for making icing, cakes, biscuits, meringues, ice creams and other deserts. It is also added to vinegars, jams and marmalades. Lavender blossoms may also be tied in muslin bags and cooked with black currants and soft fruits. Some lavender species are able to be used for other culinary purposes, but most are not suitable.

Other Uses

Dried lavender leaves and flowers may be used for pot pourri or to create small lavender pillows to help with insomnia or to use as moth/insect repellents. To dry the lavender sprigs, cut the full length of the flower stalk just before flowers are fully open and hang upside down in a cool, dry place with good air flow. The flowers also last well as a cut flower and they are well known for use in dried flower arrangements and to create incense sticks.

This book transformed my life in a way that other books haven't
Format: Paperback
This book transformed my life. It took me a full year to read (I did read several other books within the same timeframe), I read the first section of it with my work team, did all of the homework or suggested activities within, attended some seminars by the Canfield Training Group, and lastly invested in becoming a trainer of the curriculum because I connected so well with the concepts presented. I have been teaching leadership principles within a university setting for almost 20 years. This book adds to that knowledge, as well as brings about several exercises to shift from unconscious to conscious brain activity that I really needed in my life for my own progression. I plan to read this book annually, as it has so much information in it that it is worthy of additional time and study. I had my first copy cut and spiral bound so that I can spend more time on individual pages, treating the book more like a manual. I often find myself referencing the book and have shared much of it's teachings in all arenas of my life. In my library of hundreds of business books, this one has been placed onto my top 5 list. I am so grateful for all it has done to increase my productivity, improve my relationships, accomplish more with less, change my paradigms about asking for what I need, spur me to take a much stronger conscious approach to money management, and the list goes on. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is open to learning, open to diving deep into oneself, and anyone who is willing to take complete responsibility for one's own life, one's own success, and one's own ability to let go of the past to rewrite a new future. This book has very practical, easy to carry out activities and projects to radically improve one's life. Lastly, I recommend reading this book with others who you can share your progress with. Coming together in our work team to read and discuss was so helpful as we shared our a-ha moments, our lists, our completed assignments like our have's, do's and be's list and goal binder. We had a vision board party where we each created ours and then presented it to each other. Many awesome things started to manifest after putting those boards together, and we could celebrate those things with each other. Reading this book together created a strong bond with that team. As the year progressed our schedules made it more challenging to read it together, so we decided to finish it individually. But we learned that we missed the group learning, so we will soon start up again together as a group with an altered format of presenting the chapters to one another instead of actually reading and discussing together. (We would come together on our lunch hour to read along in our books with the cd of the book, pausing it often to discuss) Individually, I would listen to the book while commuting for 60 minutes every day. I would then review key things I would hear at night before bed. It was bitter sweet when I finished it last night. I truly did not want the book to end, yet I was so excited to check off a goal of completing the book by Nov 1st. This book truly has made a significant positive impact on my life. It was well worth my time and money.

The Success Principles is a must have in any "success" book home library...
Format: Paperback
I read the first version of The Success Principles back in 2009 and I honestly felt like I came across one of the best and most complete resources for success (and really life) I have ever read. I was even more thrilled when I discovered there was The Success Principles for Teens because finding effective ways to teach these life tools and techniques to my daughters has always been a top priority, and challenge. My oldest daughter has not only read it, she has even referred back to some of the principles when I obviously break them :). I had all but forgotten pre-ordering this updated version of The Success Principles until I got the surprise package in the mail today. All of the core content in this version is still there, but what was exciting to read were the new success stories included of people that bought the original book and had breakthroughs. The completely new content included is "Success in the Digital Age" and it is a fantastic resource. I would consider myself very knowledgeable when it comes to technology and Internet Marketing (having worked as a Sr. System Engineer for over a decade and years learning and implementing various Internet Marketing solutions), and I can say this addition is fantastic. The content and advice he managed to include in just five chapters is impressive, and spot on. If topics like social media, technology, and online branding are areas that are a weakness, or you want to learn more about the most effective ways to leverage these and other technical solutions used by some of the most successful leaders in this space, than you will love this addition to the book. I will end this review by saying I am life coach, and resources like these are gold. I am constantly referring back to this text before and after sessions. I am a huge fan of countless self-help experts and bestselling authors, and I have a huge list of books I love and regularly recommend, but none are such a complete resource like this book. As one of the "experts" in this space said about this book, trying to just identify the "big ideas" included in this book is virtually impossible, because everything he includes IS a "big idea." So if you are a fan of this type of content this is a must have in your library, if only for a reference.

Success Principles is a handbook you definitely want to carry with you.
Format: Kindle, Format: Kindle
Many of us are looking for ways to improve our lives, our relationships, and our business. We read books, take training and hire coaches. And these things work. Whether you are new in your quest to self improvement, or a seasoned veteran, the Success Principles is one of the “must read” handbooks you want to read, apply and keep at your side. It contains 67 principles described in a concise, simple to understand entertaining way. Each of these principles by itself is certain to bring positive change in different aspects in your life. As a group they are certain to move your life forward. You will learn how to improve your relationships by listening and asking for feedback. You will learn to focus on those things that truly matter and let go of the good to leave time and resources for the great. You will learn ways to take care of yourself, put yourself in touch with your thoughts and your emotions, and slow your mind down so that you can be creative, concentrate and work more effectively. You will learn ways to communicate with others, to tap into “masterminds”, to ask for what you need, to overcome resistance, obstacles and fears and to move forward. I am a fan of the Success Principles and Jack Canfield's work. Everything contained in this book is taught in his seminars. Powerful yet simple techniques. Buy the book. Read it. And then, every few days concentrate on bringing one of the principles into your life. Sit back and enjoy the results.

Solid Advice & Inspiration for Anyone Looking to Reach their Goals!
Format: Paperback
Overall, I enjoyed reading The Success Principles and found most of the practical advice to be solid and inspirational. I especially liked the discussions about using vision boards, mastermind groups, and other practical techniques. I found many other suggestions to be helpful, but common knowledge (e.g.., setting goals, thinking positive, find a mentor, and the 80/20 principle). My only complaints about this book including being WAY too wordy at 550 pages (should have been half that length!) and the occasional reference to something odd called the Law of Attraction (which is sounds to me like some kind of "new age theory"... I don't buy it). Regardless of those downsides, I still think this book is worth the read for anyone looking for a self-help book that motivates you and gives you practical tools to reach your goals.
