Begonia luxurians – Growth and Care Guide

Begonia luxurians Scheidw., commonly known as the Palm Leaf Begonia, is a spectacular species recognized for its unique palm-like foliage and elegant growth habit. Native to the rainforests of Brazil, this rare Begonia features long, slender, deeply lobed leaves with a cascading appearance, giving it an exotic, tropical charm. Its delicate clusters of small white or pale pink flowers add to its ornamental appeal, making it a prized addition to indoor plant collections.

Key Features of Begonia luxurians

  • Palm-like foliage: Long, narrow, deeply lobed leaves resemble palm fronds.
  • Graceful, upright growth: Forms a tall, elegant structure, ideal for decorative displays.
  • Rare collector’s plant: Sought after for its distinctive shape and rainforest aesthetic.

Essential Information

  • Natural Habitat: Native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil, thriving in warm, humid conditions.
  • Indoor Size: Can grow up to 1.5 meters tall, with a bushy, upright habit.
  • Growth Habit: Semi-woody perennial with a tree-like structure.
  • Toxicity: Contains oxalates that may cause mild irritation if ingested.

How to Care for Begonia luxurians

  • Placement: Best placed in a warm, bright spot with indirect sunlight.
  • Light: Prefers bright, filtered light; direct sun can scorch the delicate leaves.
  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy; allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Humidity: Requires high humidity (60%+); benefits from a humidifier or misting.
  • Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 18°C-26°C; sensitive to cold drafts.
  • Soil: Well-draining, airy mix with organic matter; a blend of perlite, and compost is ideal.
  • Repotting: Repot annually or when the plant outgrows its container.
  • Fertilizing: Use a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer every four weeks during the growing season.
  • Propagation: Easily propagated through stem cuttings placed in moist soil or water.
  • Hydroponics: Can adapt to semi-hydroponic growing with proper aeration.
  • Pruning: Trim leggy growth and remove spent flowers to maintain a compact shape.

Common Issues and Solutions

  • Pests: Watch for spider mites and aphids; treat with neem oil, or use beneficial insects or insecticidal soap.
  • Root Rot: Avoid overwatering and ensure proper drainage.
  • Leaf Browning: Often caused by low humidity – keep moisture levels stable.

Additional Notes

Begonia luxurians thrives best when its tropical environment is mimicked indoors. Maintaining consistent humidity, warmth, and indirect light ensures lush growth and vibrant foliage.

Etymology

The genus name Begonia honors Michel Bégon, a French botanist. The species name luxurians comes from Latin, meaning "luxurious," referring to its opulent foliage.

Size: Large, Style: 4 Pack
My dogs absolutely love these! I bought them at a great price! They have lasted my dogs over a year! I have a full pitbull, pit/lab, pit/boxer, and a pit/mastiff. So needless to say they pass the power jaw test. They look just like the pictures and they are pretty light weight!

Benebone is fantastic for heavy chewers and busy, adolescent pups!
Size: Medium, Style: 4 Pack
This little multi-pack is cost-effective in a few ways, super durable and effective, and I'll definitely be purchasing the multi-pack again. We discovered these about a year ago and have been buying them ever since. I'm just now getting around to reviewing them because they're that good, plus I love that the company is family-owned. Four "bones" lasts a little over a month for a power chewer, which is a bargain! You get 4 medium size "bones" for the retail price of 2. These smell delicious to dogs but humans can detect the odor, which is so nice. They are incredibly durable, but somehow also not too hard for a power chewer, and they keep pup from chewing on books and other items that we don't wanted chewed to bits. Heavy chewers (and their people!) love these and the variety of shapes means we can swap them out in rotation and keep pup's interest going for a few weeks. Wait until your pup has all of their adult teeth, as they are a little too hard for teething. And for super power chewers, watch out for the fish shaped chew, as this one seems to allow larger pieces to be chewed off the fish head "corners" more easily due to the relative thinness of the shape at that point when compared to the other 3 shapes. Keep an eye on how much your power chewer is taking off of these "bones" (little tiny pieces do get chewed off) and toss them (or recycle with Benebone!) when your dog is able to chew off more than a crumb size piece. Hooray for Benebone! Hooray for family-owned businesses! We'll be back for more!

Seems Very Durable So Far
Size: Small, Style: 4 Pack
My dogs are really enjoying these chew toys! These keep them busy for hours!! So far they seem very durable and my little dogs can really chew and destroy so I’m happy about these so far! They rarely each chew a toy at the same time, but choose to take turns instead. But now they each have a chew toy and they are happy campers!!

Recommended by my breeder
Size: Small, Style: Wishbone/Dental
Purchased these two small sized Benebones for my puppy Springer Spaniel. It’s one of her favorite toys and it is well used and well worn. Replaced these with the medium size recently as she’s almost full grown now.
