M. crystallinum is native to Africa, south Europe, and the Sinai peninsula. It has small 1 to 3 inch long cylindrical leaves that are covered in bladder cells, giving this species its common name. Although it has small leaves, Mesembryanthemum crystallinum is able to creep 8 to 23 inches on the ground. The epidermis is glistening green, but turns more red with higher exposure to light. M. crystallinum blooms in spring to early summer with daisy-like flowers that are creamy yellow in color and 1 to 2 inches in diameter. This species is grown for its drought tolerance, colorful flowers, and ground covering growth habit. M. crystallinum grows best in full sun to partial shade sitting in well draining soil. Water adequately during summer and keep dry during winter as the species is prone to rot. Allow the soil to completely dry out in between waterings. USDA plant hardiness zones 9a through 11b.
