Sandalwood essential oil is the base material for all traditional Attars. Sandalwood essential oil and wood products are a mainstay of traditional and modern perfumery, incense-making, cosmetics and therapeutic products. 

Due to our overwhelming demand for Sandalwood products, we overharvested and mismanaged our Indian Sandalwood trees to such a degree that they almost went extinct. Eventually, the government stepped in, shutting down the industry and making it illegal to cut down trees or sell Indian Sandalwood products abroad. 

An extensive replanting program was instituted, but the industry and the Indian Sandalwood tree population have not yet fully recovered.

Many areas in the world offer ideal conditions for growing Sandalwood trees. You can now try your hand at growing your own.

How to germinate Sandalwood seeds

Since I have not tried to sprout these seeds yet, I can only say that there are numerous online methods and instructions for us to try. I personally like the one that imitates their natural cycle and calls for soaking them for a day, then leaving them out in the hot sun till they show cracks in their shells before planting them 3/4-1" deep.
