Tradescantia zebrina, commonly known as the Wandering Jew, Inch Plant, or Striped Wandering Dude, is a vibrant, fast-growing trailing plant loved for its dazzling, metallic-striped foliage and easy-care nature. A member of the Commelinaceae family and native to the tropical regions of Mexico and Central America, this striking species adds instant colour, texture, and life to any indoor space.

Each oval-shaped leaf features a stunning combination of deep green and rich purple tones, with shimmering silver stripes running along the top surface. The undersides glow with a vivid violet hue, creating a dramatic two-tone effect as the plant trails from hanging planters or shelf edges. Hardy, colourful, and endlessly versatile, Tradescantia zebrina is a classic houseplant for beginners and seasoned collectors alike.

Tradescantia zebrina – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light, which intensifies its purple and silver striping. It tolerates medium light but may lose vibrancy in shaded areas. Avoid harsh, direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. A bright windowsill with filtered light is ideal.

Watering

Keep the soil lightly moist, watering when the top 2–3 cm feels dry. Water thoroughly and let excess drain away — Tradescantia zebrina dislikes sitting in water. Reduce watering slightly in winter but don’t allow the soil to dry completely.

Temperature and Humidity

Temperature: Prefers warmth between 18–28 °C; avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 12 °C.
Humidity: Average indoor humidity is suitable, but slightly higher humidity will maintain lush, glossy foliage. Mist occasionally or place near other tropical plants.

Soil and Potting

Use a well-draining, peat-free mix — compost combined with perlite and a little sand works perfectly. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh the soil and encourage fuller growth. Tradescantia prefers to be slightly snug in its pot.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. Avoid over-fertilising, which can cause weak, leggy growth. Pause feeding in autumn and winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Pinch back the tips regularly to promote bushier growth and prevent legginess. Pruned stems can easily be propagated in water or directly in soil to create new plants. Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove dust and showcase their metallic sheen.

Growth and Maturity

A vigorous, fast-growing trailer, Tradescantia zebrina can reach 60–90 cm in trailing length indoors. With regular pruning, it maintains a compact, cascading habit that looks stunning in hanging baskets or draped from shelves.

Common Issues

  • Leggy growth: Insufficient light or lack of pruning.

  • Faded colours: Not enough light.

  • Brown leaf tips: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.

  • Pests: Occasionally affected by spider mites or aphids — treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Background and Benefits

Native to tropical and subtropical forests in Mexico and Central America, Tradescantia zebrina grows as a groundcover in warm, humid conditions, spreading quickly along forest floors. Its shimmering, striped leaves and trailing habit have made it a beloved houseplant for generations.

Beyond its ornamental beauty, Tradescantia zebrina is known for being one of the easiest and fastest plants to propagate, making it ideal for sharing and gifting. Symbolically, it represents vitality and connection — a plant that thrives in community and abundance.

Adorable, lavender bone pillow
Great soft little bone that smell smells like lavender. I use lavender in the bedroom for my blind dog. These other scents in other rooms, but lavender is for the bedroom. That way she knows which room she is in. I made little cedar sachet’s to make a scent trail around the house so that she can go from one room to the next and not get lost. She recently became blind in the last eight months from her diabetes. She had already been deaf for a few years, so it’s been a big adjustment for her. But she’s become much more confident and is finding her way around very well. I use calendula sachet for her kitchen area. Clove sachets for her special area in the living room. Marigold‘ sachets in the office. And then I have orange scented sachet at the places that she needs to stop and turn around and go back. Nothing overpowering. 5 feet between the sachets. She will be 14 next month.!

Cute but not great
Very cute but not a good toy for puppies. We first had to remove the squeaker and scent sachet as our 5 month old Mal-Shih figured out how to get it unzipped. Then she proceeded to chew the zipper up. It’s now in the trash and it was only 4 weeks old! It’s not functional for a puppy.

Has a zipper
I took out the squeak as my girl took it out as there is a zipper which I was surprised at for a dog toy. I just have to watch her with it until I can see it shut. The lavender is a good quality and she love it.
