<About Kintsugi Part>
This vessel was broken at the antique store during the earthquake. In order to create a new sustainable value, Mr. Suginaka, an urushi (Japanese lacquer) Meister, repaired and upcycled this vessel using Kintsugi, a unique Japanese ware repair method.
After carefully joining the broken part using urushi, the 24-karat gold powder was sprinkled to decorate the joined parts. For this piece, we applied a Kintsugi as simple as possible to match the original appearance of the vessel, as in traditional Kintsugi pieces.
<About the original vessel>
Although the artist and date of creation are unclear, this piece is in the form of Raku ware, which is considered the most prestigious type of pottery in the tea ceremony. Raku ware was originally created by Sen Rikyu, who perfected the tea ceremony, in order to symbolize the Wabi-Sabi philosophy.
Raku ware is so great that even today, many followers continue to produce works of art. These works are not mere copies, but are filled with the particularities of each artist. To avoid wasting the diligent efforts their craftsmen put into handmaking each piece, we decided to revive them as new Kintsugi pieces.
<Thoughts behind the piece>
The original red color is simple, but applying Kintsugi makes it even more glamour. You can fully feel the philosophy of upcycling, which is to make something even better because it is broken. The calm red color of the bowl allows you to enjoy matcha or tea time with elegance.
