International 386 Planter Unit Operator's Manual & Setting-Up Instructions

This is the Operator's Manual and Setting-Up Instructions for the International Harvester 386 Planter Unit, covering rotary valve metering, seed plate timing, hill-drop setup, toolbar configuration, drive chain arrangement, and the complete special equipment lineup across 56 pages. This is the original factory document IH issued to 386 planter owners and is available as an instant digital download.

About the International 386 Planter Unit

The International 386 was IH's unit-type row crop planter from the late 1970s, designed for mounting on toolbar frames in configurations ranging from 4-row to 8-row depending on row spacing and tractor horsepower. The 386 used IH's rotary valve metering system — a design in which a rotor controlled by a drive chain timed the release of seeds from the hopper into the seed tube, coordinating with the seed plate to achieve the target hill spacing in hill-drop mode or consistent seed flow in drill mode. Getting the rotary valve timing correct — and correctly timing the seed plate relative to the rotor — was the critical setup task on the 386, and errors in timing produced the skips, doubles, and inconsistent hill spacing that operators found most frustrating. The 386 also used IH's parallel linkage row unit design, which maintained more consistent depth than older flat-bar linkage units as terrain varied across a field. The special equipment options for the 386 were extensive: double disk openers, depth bands, seed firming wheels, gauge wheels, peanut drill attachments, and seed flow monitors were all available, giving the planter significant adaptability across crop types and soil conditions.

What This Manual Covers

This 56-page manual and setting-up instructions document covers the 386 from initial toolbar configuration through the full adjustment and service sequence. Key sections include:

  • Safety & Operating Rules — work safety guidelines; pre-operation and on-highway operation requirements
  • Introduction & Planter Features — planter features overview and component identification
  • Adjusting & Operating — planting depth adjustment; rotary valve and rotor operation; rotor drive chain setup; timing the seed plate and rotor; hill-drop planter configuration; leveling the tool bar and setting tool bar height; seed plate speeds; seeds per hill for cotton and corn; drive chain length and idler arrangement; drilling distances and hill spacings; distribution quantities; hopper bottom equipment; seed plate selection
  • Setting Up & Special Equipment — disk furrow opener; press wheel spacer; double disk opener; depth bands; parallel adjustable runner wings; gauge shoes; press wheel pressure spring; disk coverer; peanut drill; stubble mulch double disk openers; seed flow monitor; chain guard cover; rubber press wheel tires; seed firming wheels; parallel linkage pressure spring; gauge wheel
  • Lubrication & Reference — lubrication points; lubrication guide; measurement unit reference

Why This Manual Matters

  • Rotary valve and seed plate timing procedure: Correctly timing the rotor relative to the seed plate is the single most important setup task on the IH 386 — the factory timing procedure documented here is the definitive reference, and improper timing is the leading cause of inconsistent spacing and missed hills on these planters
  • Drive chain length and idler arrangement: Population changes on the 386 require changing the drive chain routing and sprocket arrangement, not just a single sprocket swap — the factory chain length and idler configurations for each target population are documented in a way that's essential for operators who need to change crops or population targets mid-season
  • Seed plate speed selection: IH's rotary valve system requires matching seed plate speed to field speed and target population separately from drive chain changes — the seed plate speed charts in this manual are the factory reference for that relationship
  • Special equipment documentation: The 386's attachment lineup includes peanut drill, seed flow monitor, stubble mulch disk openers, and seed firming wheels — options that significantly change how the planter performs in different crops and conditions, and that require their own setup procedures documented in the special equipment section
  • Setting-up instructions included: This manual includes both the operator's manual and the setting-up instructions — covering the initial assembly and configuration procedures that are most critical when working with a used planter acquired without documentation
  • Original factory content: This is the manual IH issued to 386 planter owners, carrying manual code 1 083 943 R3 (6-79)

Manual Code: 1 083 943 R3 (6-79)

HAND-SIZED EXFOLIATORS THAT LATHER WELL AND EARN A STARRING ROLE IN MY SHOWER ROUTINE
Color: Dark Grey, Color: Dark Grey
I have been using Nigerian exfoliating nets for a while. They exfoliate very well, but they are not my favorite for building up a rich lather. These solve that problem, so they have become part of my regular shower routine. I still use a net for my back as it is hard to reach, but for everywhere else these are more practical. PACKAGING/CONTENTS: * You get 2 round exfoliating scrubbers in sealed compressed packaging. Giftable. EASE OF USE: * Very simple. Soak, lather up, and scrub. * The elastic hand strap is useful and keeps the pad secure, so there is less fumbling and dropping. * The round shape is easy to control around tighter areas like behind the ears, collarbone, and ankles. SIZE: * Size is just right for hand use. * It is compact enough to maneuver easily, but large enough to cover a decent amount of surface area with each pass. QUALITY: * Quality is excellent for a $9.99 two-pack. * The exfoliating surface has enough bite to do its job, while the softer inner body keeps it from feeling harsh in the hand. * The stitching and edge binding look solid, and the pad keeps its shape well when wet. SOFTNESS AND EXFOLIATION: * These are not ultra-soft fluffy bath sponges. They are exfoliators first. * The textured outer surface does the work, and it gives a satisfying scrub without feeling absurdly aggressive. * I would call the center comfort-oriented and the outer surface functional. THICKNESS: * Thickness is dialed in well for the use. * Thick enough to feel substantial in the hand and provide spring, but not so chunky that it takes forever to rinse or dry. DRYING TIME: * Drying time is fast if you hang them by the loop or strap. * They do not stay waterlogged the way some denser bath sponges can. VALUE FOR MONEY: * At $9.99 for a 2-pack, these are appropriately priced. * Anticipate replacing them monthly which is a reasonable cost for the largest organ of the body. OVERALL: STRONG BUY. I am a convert. Will buy again.
