New leafs emerge along the edges of mature pads and have succulent-like spikes that fall off as it grows. Their jointed architectural growth structure makes an excellent container plant outdoors in full sun!
>>FUN FACT: Both the pads and the fruit of prickly pear are edible! Harvest younger pads in spring and summer being sure to scrape off any hair-like spikes. They can be eaten raw or cooked, and are said to taste like a combination of okra and green pepper.

Light: Bright direct morning sun to filtered afternoon light.
Water: Drought tolerant.Water when soil has dried out 
completely.
Bloom: Mature plants produce fruit below a bright pink flower in summer
Soil: Rich, well draining potting mix. Additives could include sand and perlite.
Propagate: Twist off or cut a mature pad at the joint and allow to callous over. Insert pad about 1/3 way into soil and lightly water. Keep in bright, light. Roots should form in 2-4 weeks.
