Alocasia infernalis ‘Black Magic’

Alocasia infernalis ‘Black Magic’ is a compact dark Alocasia from Borneo with glossy leaves that can look deep purple, violet-black or almost black depending on the light. It stays much smaller than many upright Alocasia, with several dark leaves held close together at the base. Mature leaves are glossy and reflect light easily, while young leaves can open with a stronger metallic purple tone.

Alocasia infernalis ‘Black Magic’ is the dark cultivated form of Alocasia infernalis P.C.Boyce, a species described from Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo. It is recorded from the Kapit Division, including the Sungai Gaat area, where it grows in warm, shaded, moist to ever-wet lowland forest. In nature it is associated with deep leaf litter over clay-rich soils, so indoors it does best with warm roots, a lightly moist mix and good aeration.

Glossy dark Bornean leaves

The leaves are peltate, which means the petiole attaches into the blade rather than at the edge. Each blade is ovate to triangular, smooth-edged and glossy, with a pointed tip and a deep purple surface on both sides. The species can reach around 55 cm tall, with leaf blades often around 15 cm long and sometimes larger on mature plants.

Growth stays compact. Several leaves can sit close together on slender petioles, forming a compact base. The leaves are thinner than those of heavy, raised-textured Alocasia, so dry air, handling marks and pests show quickly on the surface.

Care for Alocasia infernalis ‘Black Magic’

  • Light: Bright indirect light or soft filtered light suits this shade-adapted species. Indoors, steady brightness helps new leaves firm up and keeps the roots active.
  • Watering: Water once the upper layer has started to dry and the pot feels lighter. The mix should stay lightly moist, with fresh air returning around the lower roots between waterings.
  • Substrate: Use a fine-to-medium airy aroid mix with bark, coco husk, perlite, pumice or similar mineral aeration.
  • Temperature: Keep it away from cold shelves and windowsills after watering, because chilled wet roots recover slowly.
  • Humidity: Raised humidity helps the thin, glossy leaves expand with fewer crisp edges. A warm cabinet or vitrine can suit this plant if airflow is gentle.
  • Feeding: Use light, diluted fertiliser while new leaves are forming. A compact root system does best with gentle feeding.
  • Pot size: Keep the pot close to the root mass. A smaller, well-draining container gives better control over moisture.

Growth, ageing leaves and common problems

Alocasia infernalis may slow down in darker months. During a quiet phase, a firm base and stable older leaves are normal. Reduce watering according to pot drying and wait for active growth before dividing or repotting.

Watch the leaves closely because dark surfaces can hide early problems.

  • Crisp edges: Dry air, heat load or uneven moisture are the usual causes.
  • Yellow leaves: Start with lower mix moisture and root warmth.
  • Soft petioles: Root stress often begins below the substrate.
  • Dull leaf surface: Dust, hard-water residue and spider mites can all reduce the glossy finish.
  • Small new leaves: Transport, weak roots, low warmth or old substrate can reduce leaf size for one cycle.

Once a leaf has fully yellowed, remove it cleanly at the base. Healthy dark leaves should stay in place, even with small marks, because each leaf helps feed the compact plant. Firm offsets or corms can be separated during active growth.

Mature plants can produce paired inflorescences with a spathe and spadix, followed by orange to red berries. Indoors, flowering is occasional; the plant usually keeps its dark leaves through active growth.

Alocasia infernalis contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Choose a spot where pets and children cannot reach the leaves or cut plant parts. The species name infernalis comes from Latin and refers to the very dark purple-black mature foliage.

Good for combo skin. Scented.
This moisturizer has a lightweight texture. It reminds me of a gel-cream. It does have a floral/powdery/fresh scent. It doesn’t bother me that much but a lot of people don’t like scented face products. I took off one star for the fact that it’s scented because I feel it’s unnecessary. Especially since this moisturizer is labeled for sensitive skin. I also feel like it is pricey for the small 1.3 floz bottle. It seems a bit basic for $40 doesn’t it? I have combo/acne prone skin and I am currently on prescription tretinoin/hydroquinone cream from my dermatologist. I needed a face moisturizer that is light and wouldn’t clog my pores but also super hydrating. My skin is very sensitive right now and I had no issues with this moisturizer. I felt it provided the perfect amount of hydration without being greasy and heavy feeling on my face. I don’t like heavy moisturizers. The hydrance rich version is way too heavy for me. The finish of this light moisturizer is soft and doesn’t leave a sticky feeling, like some face moisturizers do. I can wear this year round. It is hard to find the perfect balance of hydration without being greasy. Overall I will keep purchasing it because I am extremely picky about the texture of my face moisturizers and this one is perfect for me. It also wears well under sunscreen and makeup. I do think it’s a little overpriced and the fragrance is unnecessary. Overall it works for me but it’s very important to know about the floral fragrance. The fragrance does go away after a little while but it is present upon application and also minutes after. If you don’t mind the fragrance and have combo, acne prone skin like I do, you will probably like the texture. If you don’t want to pay the money for this avene, try vanicream face moisturizer. The cerave pm face moisturizer is also kinda similar. The vanicream face moisturizer being the most similar to avene light, in my opinion. Vanicream is also unscented and a fraction of the price. Make sure it is the one specifically for the face, without sunscreen. I was not sent this product for free and this is not a paid review. All honest opinions here.

Strong irritating scent
Strong perfume scent that triggered my allergies. Why would a product designed for sensitive skin have fragrance added? My dermatologist had provided me some samples from Avene that were unscented and worked great, but this product is unusable for me if it's perfumed.

Holy Grail Moisturizer for Rosacea
Style: Restorative Protective Cream-3.3 Fl Oz
In seeing so many negative reviews I felt compelled to weigh in as this is my favorite moisturizer. I have very dry, menopausal skin. Additionally, I have rosacea which seems to have been a nice gift from said menopause (you can only laugh, right?). It's very common for those of us in our 50's to have a compromised skin barrier and when an issue like rosacea is present, even more so. Because of all this my skin is very intolerant to most moisturizers and nearly all actives (over the last few years I've had to discontinue my retinols and chemical exfoliators). While ingredients like ALA's, petrolatum, mineral oil, parafin/bees wax, and lanolin are well tolerated and known to be quite soothing, they don't hydrate very well as they are more occlusive than moisturizing. Enter this product. Magically, it does both! It's marketed as a protective cream, which again implies occlusive, but it penetrates like no other. Gone is the tight, dry feeling that persisted even when I had a heavy layer of product on my skin (my previous moisturizer was Eucerin Original Healing Cream -- which still has its uses -- because it was the only thing I could put on my skin outside of squalane oil during a flare). Now, no topical can cure rosacea. However, the right product can calm the skin, repair the damaged lipid barrier, and improve its appearance. This moisturizer does just that and it's become my holy grail. Since starting this I've also added in the Cicalfate Serum which has only aided in repairing my skin. Another Avene product that works great for me is the XeraCalm Balm which helps with itching. I use all three of these daily and they've really helped fix the secondary issues that come with rosacea. As for the complaints about it being greasy or too heavy. I can see this not working for people with normal or oily skin (or perhaps only in moderation). But my skin loves the heavier weight and because one of the ways I soothe a flare is to keep a tiny mister bottle on hand and repeatedly spray my face so I have to guard against the drying effects of evaporation. These products are so lipid heavy that I can wet my face all day long without worrying about that, though I do reapply throughout the day. As for the watery consistency issue, I haven't had that problem but it does caution on the packaging not to expose the product to temperatures below 41 degrees F (5 C). I suspect that if it gets too cold either because of the weather or because of whatever warehouse it sat in during transit it will separate. Maybe open the package and before squeezing some out look to see if it has split and then shake it up/message the tube. So, if you have skin like mine don't hesitate to try this product. I'm leaving this absurdly long review for my struggling brothers and sisters out there with rosacea in hopes that it provides some relief! Happy moisturizing, internet strangers. ;)

Possible solution to seperation
Style: Restorative Protective Cream-1.3 Fl Oz
I love this product so much, but, like everyone else the water HEAVILY separated. A lot of water just shot out immediately and as i've used the cream it has felt more and more thick bc of that, shaking the tube or not. POSSIBLE SOLUTION: I actually think the company could salvage this problem by upgrading packaging to a Cosmetic JAR and then customers could take a toothpick and stir if separation has occurred by the time of purchase. I hope to try this with my next tube, just toothpaste squeezed everything out into a nice cosmetic jar and stir the water back into the product. This is such a simple solution that could really solve the product waste. This refreshes my skin, doesn't break me out, and is lovely. I break out so easily, and being middle aged my skin really requires a dense help with moisture. <3
