Colocasia esculenta 'Waikiki' is a new variety of Colocasia being brought to us from the beautiful Royal Hawaiian® collection! Waikiki foliage is dazzling with deep-green, glossy foliage that appears to have been sprinkled with white markings. One thing no one will be able to miss is the eye-catching vivid pink veins throughout each elephant ear leaf. The veins are formed when the back of each leaf changes from purple to green, creating a purple dot in the center that will eventually flow into the veins.

Expect fully mature plants to reach a very manageable 3' tall x 3' wide when grown in adequate conditions. Full-sun, partial-sun, and semi-shade are all acceptable light levels as these are native to tropical climates! Bright sun and moist soil are BEST in humid climates.

Container gardens, borders and in mass are all great uses for this tropical beauty. Cold hardy in USDA zones 7b - 11 so they are able to withstand freezing temperatures down to 5°F, but keep in mind that they are deciduous plants. Remove dead leaves during the growing seasons.

Colocasia Waikiki Care

Elephant ears can survive in a location that receives full sun or partial shade, but it is dependent upon other factors such as the areas water supply and weather. Both indoor and outdoor plants will prefer a large amount of filtered sunlight and have medium watering needs.

Water before planting and then dig hole 2x the width of the pot it was received in. Plant 1-2" above ground soil level and backfill hole with soil. Water deeply to settle, add soil if need be and finally mulch around the plant sure to avoid areas closest to the stem.

Well-draining soil rich in organic matter, like compost or manure, are good options for Elephant Ears. A water-soluble 20-20-20 fertilizer is a good option that provides a good balance of nutrition. You can also use an all-purpose fertilizer high in nitrogen to feed your elephant ears.

It’s $30 to return and quickly STINKS from body heat

Original review about $30 return below, but since it cost to return I gave it to my husband. He’s a hot sleeper so other than this pillow we’ve switched to all cotton, linen or wool bedding and it’s made a huge difference. (Polyester is plastic so it reflects your heat back to you and makes you sweat more and doesn’t breathe.) I truly would not have kept this pillow except $30 felt like a waste just to return and he got excited about it. So okay, it’s his. Well I’m the laundry queen in our household (he does all dishes) and I realized very quickly this pillow would need to be washed OFTEN. Like, once a week is NOT enough. Something about body heat and this material smells HORRIBLE. Washing it is obviously not easy, so I handwash the outer layer of the pillow with a very gentle soap (bought for silk). And then it has to hang dry. It doesn’t matter. I can clean it perfectly, no smell remaining whatsoever, but after two nights, it’s so strong I can smell it JUST STANDING NEAR THE BED. Look. I mentioned my hubs sleeps hot, sure. But he’s hygienic. This should not be such an issue. It’s never been an issue with any other pillows. The smell doesn’t even smell like him or like B.O. or anything. It’s awful and legitimately churns my stomach. But can I throw out the stupid $200 thing? Noooo. Now he’s attached. And I’m spending hours of my life each week washing it to keep from feeling sick sleeping near it at night. And to avoid having wasted $200. Hate this thing. DON’T BUY THIS STUPID PILLOW. Dropping from 2 stars to 1 Because of the smell. Original review: I thought I could buy this and see if the height would work for me. It didn’t, and pinched my neck instead. But now the *only* way to return it is to ship through UPS (not return to the UPS Store or Kohl’s or Whole Foods, which would be free). I was going to return it and try a different size, but such a high price just to *try* it is not worth it to me. I’ve returned much larger (defective) items in the past without hassle or cost (like an entire heavy duty garage shelf with broken pieces). Had I known, I would not have ordered in the first place, so I hope this saves someone else. As for the pillow itself, it was unique, but I couldn’t even really lay my head on it for more than a moment until I had let it air out for more than a week. It REEKED upon arrival. My husband said it smelled like ozone, and my brother compared it to the inside of an airplane. It burned my throat if I tried to lay on it for more than about 30 seconds at a time. Two and a half weeks later, the smell is still slightly there. So even if it was comfy for me, I would not keep this pillow.
