Dracaena zeylanica 'Narrow' – Slender-Leaved Bowstring Hemp

Dracaena (Sansevieria) zeylanica 'Narrow' is a cultivar of Dracaena zeylanica (L.) Mabb., still often sold under the older genus name Sansevieria. Commonly called bowstring hemp, this evergreen perennial is native to South and Southeast Asia, especially India and Sri Lanka. A close relative of the well-known “mother-in-law’s tongue,” this form is distinguished by its noticeably narrower foliage. The long, sword-like leaves are vivid green with subtle horizontal striping, creating a refined, upright silhouette that suits modern interiors.

What Makes Dracaena 'Narrow' Distinct

  • Leaf Shape: Much slimmer than the standard zeylanica, giving a more delicate appearance.
  • Coloration: Deep green blades with lighter horizontal striping.
  • Growth Habit: Upright clumping, spreading gradually via rhizomes.
  • Resilience: Hardy and tolerant of neglect, ideal for beginner growers.

Origin and Background

Dracaena zeylanica originates from India, Sri Lanka, and surrounding regions, where its fibrous leaves were historically used for bowstrings, giving rise to the common name “bowstring hemp.” Once classified in the genus Sansevieria, it is now placed in Dracaena following molecular research. The 'Narrow' cultivar was selected for its slimmer foliage, offering a different texture from the broader-leaved standard type.

How to Grow Dracaena 'Narrow'

  • Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light but adapts to shade; stronger striping in brighter conditions.
  • Watering: Extremely drought-tolerant; water sparingly and allow soil to dry fully before rewatering.
  • Soil: Prefers a free-draining succulent or cactus mix.
  • Temperature: Best kept between 18 – 27 °C; protect from frost.
  • Fertilizer: Feed lightly with diluted succulent fertilizer during the growing season.
  • Containers: Grows well in narrow pots and adapts to crowded roots.

Care Considerations

  • Overwatering: The primary risk; soggy soil quickly leads to root rot.
  • Growth Speed: Moderate; new leaves emerge steadily from the rhizome.
  • Pest Issues: Occasionally subject to mealybugs or spider mites if stressed.
  • Toxicity: Like all Dracaena, toxic to pets if ingested.

Why Choose Dracaena 'Narrow'

Dracaena zeylanica 'Narrow' combines the toughness of bowstring hemp with a more refined look. Its slim leaves create a sleek, upright profile that pairs well with contemporary décor while retaining the classic resilience of snake plants. For collectors and beginners alike, it offers both visual interest and reliability.

Etymology

The genus name Dracaena comes from the Ancient Greek δράκαινα (drakaina), meaning “female dragon,” a reference to the red resin (“dragon’s blood”) produced by some species. The epithet zeylanica refers to Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), part of the plant’s native range.

Great start
Format: Kindle
I loved this book! It's funny but still deals with tough themes, like chronic illness, a serial killer on the loose, and a dash of self-harm. The guys are interesting and distinct, we don't know too much about them yet. It does end on a really terrible cliffhanger but on the bright side the next book is out and I believe the series is complete. I have enjoyed both of these authors separately and this is a great team up!

Fudge!
Format: Kindle
Titles aren’t my strong suit. Sorry not sorry. That ending has me completely frustrated book two isn’t out yet. Just throwing that out there. First thing first, this is a high school book where the lead is under 18. Yea yea she’s about month from being an adult, but I can’t say I would’ve even opened the file if I’d realized. It’s not a smut fest or anything, but there is sexual tension as each party figures out their emotions. That being said, it’s a good book. There are some troubling parts, like how the supes come into their powers at 13, but most of those are dealt with in a way that makes sense. Kian is the exception. His whole arc pisses me off, especially since no one stepped in. Reflecting back on real world situations, ten or so years ago, I can see it happening, but it still makes me sick. Which, I’m sure was the whole damn point. For the most part, Courting Darkness is a fun read. I found myself laughing along with most of the set up. By the time it started getting serious, I’d grown to like the characters enough it held an impact. I’ll be adding book two to my list for when it comes out.

An intriguing story that played out slowly while introducing some unique characters. The story became quite fascinating to read as these same characters provided startling revelations to their lives. As their relationships evolve, more drama and mystery is revealed adding to my fascination. I can’t wait to read more.

Outstanding Story!!!!!!!
Format: Kindle
Oh I loved this story. Sera is such an amazing, fun character. She has so much fire inside of herself. She has humor that makes you laugh with her sassy comments. The guys are fantastic. I don’t feel as if we really have gotten to know who and what they are but they are such a mix of fae. The story is extremely well written and developed. It had me pulled in and didn’t let go. There was so much action, drama, and suspense. Then we get to the ending and goodness there is so much going on. This ending was a major cliffhanger and I absolutely can’t wait to see what happens next.

Exceptional
Format: Kindle
I think this an exciting entertaining story different from other fantasy reverse harmen story. I love the 1st book in this series and hope it continues to weave a story of friendship, love and disappointment as well as sadness. The cliffhanger was gripping and held you in suspense that waiting until the next book was released was almost too much. I’m so glad I waited to read this series until the majority of the books were released. Katie May and Quinn Arthur’s are wonderful writers and I’m looking forward to reading more from both of them.
