Tasmanian Tree Fern (Dicksonia antarctica)

Tasmanian Tree Fern brings a lush, prehistoric look to shaded spaces, with arching fronds that instantly make a garden or patio feel cooler and more established. It is a strong choice for courtyards and woodland-style plantings where big texture matters but flowers are not the point. In mild climates it can be grown outdoors year-round, and in cooler regions it is often enjoyed in containers that can be protected in winter. Give it consistent moisture, shelter from drying wind, and filtered light, and it becomes a long-lived specimen with real presence.

Distinctive Features

This evergreen tree fern develops a fibrous trunk topped by a rosette of large, finely divided fronds that can create a dramatic canopy effect. New fronds unfurl in spring and summer, adding fresh, bright green growth that keeps the plant looking active through the warm season. It prefers humid, sheltered conditions, and the trunk can be kept damp in dry weather to support stronger frond production. The overall habit is upright and architectural, making it read as structure in shade rather than just filler.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Part shade to full shade, with dappled light often best and more sun tolerated if soil stays evenly moist.
  • Soil: Loose, humus-rich, well-drained soil that stays consistently moist and does not dry out completely.
  • Water: Regular, consistent watering is essential, and in dry heat keep the trunk and root zone from drying out.
  • USDA Zones: USDA Zones 9 to 10, with protection required where hard freezes occur.
  • Wind: Plant in a sheltered spot, because strong wind can shred fronds and reduce the clean canopy look.
  • Humidity: Performs best with moderate to high humidity, especially during hot, dry periods.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use as a dramatic shade specimen where the trunk and arching fronds can anchor a planting with instant atmosphere.
  • Woodland Gardens: Plant in sheltered, humus-rich shade to create a lush understory and a layered, natural look.
  • Courtyards: Place in protected courtyards to deliver a cool, tropical feel in a space that stays out of harsh sun.
  • Foundation Shade: Use along shaded foundations where consistent moisture is easier to maintain and fronds stay cleaner.
  • Containers: Grow in large pots to control soil moisture and move to protection in regions with colder winters.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Do not let the plant dry out, because inconsistent moisture can lead to weak fronds and browning.
  • Mulching: Mulch the root zone to conserve moisture and keep soil cooler through summer.
  • Grooming: Remove old or damaged fronds at the trunk to keep the crown tidy and improve airflow.
  • Winter Protection: In marginal climates, protect the crown and upper trunk during cold snaps to prevent freeze damage.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly in spring and summer if needed, because overly rich feeding is less important than steady moisture.

Why Choose Tasmanian Tree Fern?

  • Shade Drama: Delivers big texture and structure in shade where many plants struggle to look substantial.
  • Architectural Form: Upright trunk and a frond canopy create a strong silhouette that reads as intentional design.
  • Mature Size: Commonly reaches about 10 to 20 feet tall with a canopy spread around 6 to 10 feet in mild climates.
  • Deer: Generally considered deer resistant, making it a useful choice for sheltered shade plantings.
  • Long-Term Presence: With consistent moisture and protection from wind, it can become a lasting centerpiece that improves with age.

If you want a true shade statement plant, Tasmanian Tree Fern delivers atmosphere and scale in a way few others can. Prioritize moisture, shelter, and humus-rich soil, and avoid sites that dry out or get blasted by wind. In the right spot, it becomes a signature specimen that makes the whole space feel cooler, greener, and more established.

Aggressive chewers have met their match.
Size: 10.5 inch Rubber Flex Tread
We purchased this toy in 2022, it finally broke last night. Four years of rough play with 2 boxers who are aggressive chewers. They would tug together, gnaw on it for hours, and often leave it outside exposed to the elements, but this toy just kept going. It was by far their favorite toy, it kept them busy for hours. I just ordered a replacement. Well worth the money, perfect size. Highly recommend.

Durable, fun, and safe for my dog
Size: 10.5 inch Rubber Flex Tread
I have a 10 month old, 50 lb mutt who has the musculature of a pit bull and the muzzle of a GSD. Buttercup’s favorite past-time is shredding toys into teeny tiny bits, but sometimes those bits don’t come back out of her mouth. She can’t have tennis balls, stuffies, anything with a squeaker, silicone toys, plastic toys, rubber toys with spikes or small appendages, anything with rope, or most chews & bones. She chewed her first and only $8+ XL bully stick like a corn chip. Finding indoor enrichment is a challenge. Buttercup is extremely pleased with this tire tug thingy, it is very ergonomic for both her and me to get a handle on it, it has more movement than any other toy she can safely have, and it’s very durable. After more than a week, there’s only a little bit of tread missing, which is definitely the best-case outcome with a super chewer. I think this is a good alternative to GoNut toys because it’s solid & dense while also a little bit easier & more interesting to play with, and very unlike GoNuts, this Tonka toy is very reasonably priced. I also think this it’s a good size for almost any breed of dog—I could definitely picture a little Boston or Frenchie dangling from one end. Highly recommended!

Dog loves it
Size: 10.5 inch Rubber Flex Tread
I would buy this again and again. It’s extremely durable and has held up great with my 9 month old Saint Bernard puppy. We even call it his “pacifier” because every night he grabs it and chews on it until he falls asleep. Definitely a favorite in our house!

Tough toy, but the yellow tire broke at the seam
Size: 10.5 inch Rubber Flex Tread
It was fun while it lasted and it got a lot of use, but it finally gave out after 6+/- months? Great tug toy. My dog is a 70# mutt with a strong bite and he's chewed through pretty much every other toy he's ever had. This one lasted longer than any of the others by quite a bit. He did zero chew damage to the tires, but the yellow tire in the middle broke at the seam. No tear, the seam just came undone at 90 degree angles. I'm going to look for something else this time but this wasn't bad considering how long it lasted and it wasn't very expensive. If I don't find anything tougher, I may purchase another one of these down the road.
