Famously known as "Hens & Chicks," these succulents are prized for their perfectly symmetrical rosettes and their incredible ability to produce "chicks" - small offsets that sprout from the mother plant to create a lush, living carpet.
When you order, we hand-select one rooted variety from our Mountain Crest Gardens nursery. You may receive a variety with velvety "cobweb" textures, deep burgundy tips, or bright lime-green leaves. Unlike most succulents, Sempervivum are exceptionally cold-hardy, making them ideal for outdoor rock gardens, alpine troughs, or indoor sunny windowsills.
- Light: Thrives in full to partial sun. Bright light brings out the most intense "stress colors" in the foliage.
- Temperature: Exceptionally cold-hardy! Most varieties can survive temperatures well below freezing, though they also grow beautifully indoors.
- Watering: Use the "soak and dry" method. Water deeply until it drains, then allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again.
- Soil: Use a well-draining succulent mix with 50%–70% mineral grit (pumice or perlite) to ensure maximum drainage.
