Spikey Leafed Shrub With Bright Colors Perfect for the Desert Landscape

This American native displays striking, sword-shaped leaves that burst from the ground in a splendid array of variegated foliage. Color Guard Yucca plants offer an unusual texture and form that adds interest to your garden or patio.

This Yucca Color Guard variety is also known as Adam’s needle, Spanish bayonet, or Carolina silk grass, and it's botanically named Yucca filamentosa 'Color Guard'. It thrives in a diverse array of climates. It is tolerant to wind, sweltering heat, high humidity, as well as drought conditions.

It is also evergreen and will retain its color through the colder months. This no-nonsense plant is tough, can withstand extremely arid climates, and is ideal for xeriscape gardens.

Its radiating leathery foliage features yellow-white center streaks flanked by dark green edging. The majority of its narrow leaves fan out alertly, spiking in every direction, while some lower leaves droop down to greet the ground. Leaf edges are further decorated with fine wiry filaments, forming hair-like curls.

During the colder months, its creamy center streaks can take on a rosy, coral-pink color.

Color Guard Yucca Flower Description

Summer brings delicate, creamy white flowers that tower above its foliage below. These bell-shaped flowers deliver a lovely fragrance and are held aloft on sturdy stalks that rise 4 to 6 feet into the air. The flowers themselves are about 1 to 3 inches long and adorn the plant beautifully. It’s no surprise that these flowers are beloved by hummingbirds and other pollinators.

Landscaping Yucca in Your Garden

Yuccas do well as accent pieces in your garden, for mass planting projects, and in containers to liven up your patio space. Yucca is also great for Zen or rock gardens, sandy lots, and low-maintenance naturalized areas.

Yucca Color Guard Care

This plant resists deer and rabbits. It is also safe for those individuals who suffer from allergies. A word of caution though, this plant is poisonous to dogs, cats, and horses.

This hardy yucca grows in USDA hardiness zones 4-10!

This plant prefers full sun or partial shade with at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight.

How Often Do You Water a Yucca Plant?

Once established, this yucca should require very little water as it is well-adapted to life in a desert. If housed inside a container, water it regularly in extreme heat.

Color Guard Yucca Size

This fast-growing shrub reaches 3 to 4 feet tall and about 4 feet wide. Growth is rounded and mostly uniform. Plant at least 2 to 3 feet apart.

Best Soil for Yucca Plants

Yuccas tolerate poor soil quality and grow in a variety of regions. It can even grow in coastal regions and tolerates salt exposure. Soil should drain well. Fertilize annually in spring. Add 1 to 2 inches of mulch around the base of the plant.

Pruning Yucca Plants

This plant does not require pruning. If dead, damaged, or unsightly leaves appear, remove them as needed. It is best to wear gloves, eye protection, and long sleeves when removing dead foliage, as yucca leaves are sharp and semi-rigid.

Propagation can be achieved when mature plants develop young plants around their base. These new plantlets can be removed and established in pots or directly into your garden elsewhere.

No, squeaky
The rubber balls are super stiff, which is good or bad depending on your dog. The squeaker is awful and terribly designed, however, It squeaks the first time you or your dog squeezes it, then it falls off inside and it becomes a rattler instead of squeaker. I thought it was a one off thing, but nope, all of the balls had the squeaker fall off inside rattling by the 2nd attempt to make it squeak.

BEST EVER!!!
We have a medium sized furbaby. He is the most gentle baby! Except with toys. He destroys everything he gets within 5 minutes. Even the aggressive chewer toys. He’s had these for a solid 24 hours. STILL INTACT!!! He’s loving them! Well, maybe he’s actually frustrated with them! Lol. He was able to stop it from squeaking… but he’s still having a ball playing with them. Not a single rip. I think we may need to put them up for a while to give his jaws and mind a break. BUY THEM NOW!!! Your baby will love them. And if they usually tear things up…. They will be able to enjoy this for a long time!!!

MUST HAVE!!! Dog is obsessed!!!
Color: Aqua
100 PLUS STARS!!! We have a very VERY active pup (6 yrs old 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️)… he has destroyed EVERYTHING we have ever given him. So I ordered this AND the replacement shell. He has chewed the ball extensively but it is in PERFECT shape, no need for the replacement one YET.. I can not rave about this enough - he LOVES it, we love watching him with it and he won’t let it out of his site at all!! If we touch it he gets upset.. so when we charge it, we put the shell back together and give him that.. which reminds me - make sure you have that screwed TIGHT.. somehow he was able to get it apart.. but once we started tightening it he hasn’t been able to.. thinking about it?? GET IT!! You won’t be disappointed and neither will your dog!!

An expensive ball to think about
Color: Aqua
Went with the foam ball because I have hopes that my dogs teeth will sink in enough to be satisfying without having to shred it like a tennis ball. So far, so good. I chose this one because the of the outer shell replacement possibility; assurance that 30 dollars towards a ball would have an extended life option for half the price if needed. It is slightly bigger than a tennis ball and big enough for my dog to be unable to get a strong clench and crush it. He does try though and it's holding up. All of the options and modes are great. However, I wish it acted more of a bait ball. Going through all three of the modes, I can't say any have sparked a wild chase. It will bounce intermittently or once touched. The intervals are long enough to lose my dogs interests. Short intervals make the ball the easy loser every time. Better on hardwood but pathetic on carpet. It will roll but not far or very fast. The only positives from this may be the battery conservation but when he stops playing with it, it is still rolling around the room. I think it takes 20-30 minutes of inactivity for sleep mode. With this, the charge will last about a day of play. It does charge quickly. It has passed the tough chewer test with one who can chew through "tuff" toys in no time but I wish it was more of a challenge. After telling my sister i purchased one, she said she would've given me hers because her dog had lost interest. Go with your hunch and find another game to invest in if you have trepidations of this being this case. I won't deduct anymore stars because the product is as advertised. Only one deducted for the price.
