Aloe 'Doran Black' is a striking hybrid succulent known for its compact, star-shaped rosettes and textured leaves. Developed by Dick Wright and named after nurseryman Doran Black, this aloe features dark green, spear-shaped leaves adorned with raised pale green and white tubercles, giving it a rough, bumpy appearance. The leaf margins are lined with small white spines, adding to its unique texture.

This aloe typically grows up to 12 inches (30 cm) tall and 8 inches (20 cm) wide, forming clusters as it matures. In bright sunlight, its foliage may take on shades of copper or orange, enhancing its visual appeal. Aloe 'Doran Black' produces coral or yellow-orange bell-shaped flowers atop slender stalks, which can bloom year-round with sufficient light.

It thrives in well-draining soil, prefers partial to full sun, and requires minimal watering using the soak-and-dry method to prevent root rot. While not cold-hardy, it can tolerate temperatures between 30°F (-1.1°C) and 50°F (10°C). This aloe is an excellent choice for both indoor and outdoor gardens, adding texture and color to succulent collections.

Light Requirements

  • Prefers bright, indirect light indoors. Too much direct sun can scorch its leaves.
  • Outdoors, it does well in full sun to partial shade, depending on climate conditions.

Watering

  • Use the soak-and-dry method—water deeply, then allow the soil to dry completely before watering again.
  • Water every 2-3 weeks, adjusting based on season and humidity.
  • Avoid overwatering, as Aloe 'Doran Black' is prone to root rot.

Soil & Potting

  • Requires well-draining soil—a mix of potting soil, coarse sand, and perlite works well.
  • Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent excess moisture buildup.

Temperature & Humidity

  • Thrives in temperatures between 60°F to 80°F (15°C to 27°C).
  • Prefers low to moderate humidity—too much moisture can lead to fungal issues.

Dog’s favorite
I don’t get the appeal of this toy, but the dogs love it. Easy to play fetch with, the dogs even use it as a tug toy occasionally. My Lab loves it so much, it’s her toy that she takes to bed with her every night. Glad I purchased it; well worth it.

Airedale tough!
Color: Rubber Chew Toy, Size: Large
We have two young Airedale Terriers and I thought this would be a good inside toy for them to tug. And I was right! Very happily so. I have to admit I was surprised when I first saw it; it seemed so small. But the thing stretches and springs back to shape. We’ve had it about 2 weeks now and it is constantly played with. Absolutely the best toy! Very interactive either alone (it rolls) or with us or they play together. I am surprised how tough it is with all the constant rough play. Highly recommend!!!
