De Philodendron 'Whipple Way' is een uitzonderlijke en zeldzame verschijning binnen de wereld van variegate bladplanten. Deze cultivar is wereldwijd geliefd om zijn unieke bladtekening, waarbij intens groen wordt afgewisseld met roze en crèmekleurige vlakken in de nieuwe bladeren. Geen enkel blad is hetzelfde, wat deze plant tot een levend kunstwerk maakt.

Oorsprong

De exacte oorsprong van de 'Whipple Way' is niet volledig gedocumenteerd, maar aangenomen wordt dat deze variëteit is ontstaan uit een natuurlijke mutatie binnen een bestaande Philodendron-hybride. De plant is vernoemd naar een straat in Florida waar de eerste moederplant zou zijn gevonden – een subtiele verwijzing naar de exclusieve en haast mysterieuze herkomst.

Kenmerken

Wat de 'Whipple Way' onderscheidt, is de onvoorspelbare, marmerachtige bontheid die zich op ieder blad anders manifesteert. De bladeren zijn hartvormig tot ovaal, met een leerachtige textuur en een opvallende nervatuur. Onder ideale omstandigheden ontwikkelt de plant grotere bladeren met diepere kleuren en een sterker contrast tussen groen en variegatie.

Verzorging

Licht

Licht, maar gefilterd zonlicht is cruciaal. Een standplaats nabij een raam op het oosten of westen is ideaal. Directe middagzon kan de bonte delen verbranden.
Gebruik eventueel groeilampen als je de variegatie wilt behouden.

Temperatuur

Tussen de 18 en 26°C voelt deze Philodendron zich het prettigst. Vermijd koude tocht of temperaturen onder de 15°C.

Substraat

Gebruik een luchtig, goed drainerend substraat op basis van kokoschips, sphagnum en schors. Een te compact mengsel leidt snel tot wortelrot.

Luchtvochtigheid

Minimaal 60%, bij voorkeur hoger. De plant doet het goed in een kast of ruimte met luchtbevochtiger.

Voeding

Geef eens per maand een gebalanceerde, stikstofarme meststof. Vermijd overbemesting – dat kan de variegatie negatief beïnvloeden.

Water geven

Houd het substraat licht vochtig, maar nooit nat. Laat de bovenste laag opdrogen tussen gietbeurten. Gebruik bij voorkeur gedemineraliseerd water of schoon regenwater om vlekken op de bladeren te voorkomen.

Bloei

Hoewel bloei bij kameromstandigheden zeldzaam is, kan deze Philodendron onder ideale omstandigheden een bloeiwijze ontwikkelen. Die is echter vrij onopvallend en wordt zelden als sierlijk ervaren – de focus ligt duidelijk op het blad.

Fun for a few minutes but beware!

I have 3 dogs so looking for multipacks of the same style toy is great so there is less squabbling between who gets what toy. I have a border collie puppy, a 4 yr old Irish wolfhound cross and a 17 yr old border collie. These toys were loved by each one of my dogs. The toys are floppy and easy to squeak in the octopus head. So much so that my elderly boy could happily play and make it squeak. He even collected the toys up and took them to his bed! My puppy ran off bounding through the house squeaking the octopus' head with the tentacle-legs flying everywhere as she ran around, so the entertainment value is pretty high! My Irish wolfhound loved the crinkling on the tentacles of the octopus and went straight for tearing into the orange toy pulling out the plastic, then pulling out the squeaker. The toy did ok with a game of tuggy (tug-o-war) with him and this toy would have been a great reward during a training session. The fabric is not very tough so this is not a toy for aggressive chewers. Legs were easily chewed off and unfortunately were ingested by one of my dogs which caused them to vomit repeatedly throughout the night. Same with the squeaker, they are thin, soft plastic. So if your dog is a voracious chewer, give these a miss. What I liked about these toys: 1. They were reasonably priced for 3 toys 2. These are not small toys! They are great for medium and large dogs. 3. Very fun for the dogs to play with. 4. No stuffing to clean up What I didn't like: 1. Toys are not durable for tough tuggers. 2. The toys are not reinforced for chewing. 3. Squeaker not strong enough. The toys just didn't last. There was maybe 15 minutes of play time at most before the chewing and destruction of the toys really got started. I might buy these again if I can give my puppy better supervision for her chewing these and trying to stop her from ingesting the pieces she is chewing off put I probably won't buy them again. There's too much plastic that can be eaten with the crinkly plastic in the legs.

I bought a set of these toys for my 30 lb black labs (mixed breed). They are normally very aggressive chewers, and as a result, these dogs are difficult to find toys for. They destroy pretty much everything except for those very strong rubber toys which are not as much fun for them to play with. So far, these toys have lasted us 2 days and counting which is quite an accomplishment considering their soft toys typically last about 10 min. or so before they start eating the stuffing and pull the squeakers out. Between the plastic noises from the tenticles and the squeakers my dogs have just been having the time of their lives. We have to confiscate them at bedtime so we can sleep! Even though I'm positive these toys will not hold up for much longer because of their chewing habits, it was worth the money to splurge on something fun for them to get so excited to play with. I intend to replace them occasionally as long as we continue getting at least a couple days of use out of them. If your dogs are less aggressive chewers then you should definitely give this toy a try!
