Midnight Oil Bee Balm (Monarda bradburiana 'Midnight Oil')

Midnight Oil Bee Balm (Monarda bradburiana 'Midnight Oil') is a native-based perennial that pairs soft spring to early summer blooms with dramatic dark foliage for a look that feels both natural and design-forward. The leaves emerge with deep purple to near-black tones that hold strong color through the season, creating instant contrast in the border even before flowering begins. In bloom, pale lavender to pink tubular flowers rise above showy bracts, bringing pollinators in early while the foliage keeps the planting looking bold and intentional. Compact and clump-forming, Midnight Oil Bee Balm makes an excellent focal point in smaller beds where you want early-season color, dark-leaf contrast, and steady garden movement.

Distinctive Features

The standout feature is the moody, dark foliage, which gives the plant presence from spring through fall and makes nearby greens look brighter and nearby flowers look more vivid. Unlike many summer bee balms, this selection blooms earlier, helping bridge the gap between spring perennials and the main summer display. The bracts add extra texture around the flowers, extending the ornamental look even after peak bloom. Aromatic foliage adds another layer of interest near paths and seating areas, especially when planted where you brush past it.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun to part shade; best color and bloom in full sun.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil is ideal; adapts to average soils and prefers not to stay overly wet.
  • Water: Low to moderate; water regularly the first season, then as needed during extended heat and drought.
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 4 to 8.
  • Habit: Upright, clumping perennial with dark foliage and airy flowering stems.
  • Mature Size: About 18 to 24 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use the dark foliage as a strong anchor in mixed borders, then let the early blooms add seasonal lift.
  • Pollinator Gardens: Provides early nectar for bees and beneficial insects when many perennials are just getting started.
  • Color-Contrast Planting: Pair with chartreuse or golden foliage and pastel bloomers for a high-contrast, modern look.
  • Cottage and Meadow Beds: Blends naturally with grasses and natives while still reading as intentional and structured.
  • Pathside Planting: Place where you can enjoy the foliage color up close and the aromatic leaves as you pass.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Keep evenly moist during establishment; once rooted in, water mainly during prolonged dry spells.
  • Airflow: Give plants spacing and sun for good air movement to keep foliage looking clean.
  • Mulching: Use a light mulch layer to conserve moisture, keeping mulch off the crown.
  • Deadheading: Trim spent blooms for a tidier look, or leave bracts for lingering texture.
  • Cutback: Cut back stems after flowering or in late fall to refresh the clump for next season.
  • Division: Divide every few years if clumps become crowded to maintain vigor.

Why Choose Midnight Oil Bee Balm?

  • Dark Foliage Impact: Deep purple leaves bring strong contrast from spring onward.
  • Early Season Bloom: Flowers earlier than many bee balms, extending pollinator season and garden interest.
  • Native Garden Value: A strong fit for pollinator and native-style plantings with a natural, clumping habit.
  • Design-Friendly Texture: Bracts and airy blooms add layered detail without feeling busy.
  • Easy Care Performance: Reliable in sunny, well-drained beds with straightforward maintenance.

If you want a compact bee balm with dramatic dark foliage and early-season blooms that bring pollinators in fast, Midnight Oil Bee Balm delivers bold contrast and lively garden energy in a manageable form.

Great Cargo Net for the Price! 👍
This item is nice and appears to be high quality compared to others that cost way more. So for $15 you cannot ask for better. Now how it holds up over time is another story. My last one was so dry rotted and it stayed stored inside the pocket of my door for several years. Regardless for only$15 if you get 1 year out of it you got your money's worth. Just purchase a new one. As far as seams, stitching and elasticity, it's very good. Carabiners are black coated what looks and feels like aluminum but cannot confirm. The quality as they open and close feel solid. Again time will tell. I would definitely recommend this net. The only negative is the bag it comes in is garbage and cheaply made. It's like dollar general plastic toiletries bag.

Very handy in many situations.
This is a very useful gadget. It is very stretchy, adjustable with extra straps, easy to store in it‘s own bag and a pretty good weight. We used it to transport a mattress, hay bales, a large stack of cardboard boxes and a desk. The hooks are strong but easy to open, it did not tangle for us at all.

Cheap and tough
I got this for a trailer not a truck and it works perfectly for dump runs instead of using a tarp and bungies. Comes in a little bag I'll never use again and had some accessories i don't understand, but if you want a springy net for something that's cheap enough not to care about breaking this is your product
