Citronella plants are tropical, perennial grasses. They can grow up to 6 feet tall, and they have long, thin leaves that are typically about 1 inch wide. The plants form large clumps and feature stems that are similar to those of other grass species, although they are somewhat wider.
The leaves of citronella plants have a strong aroma, which is where the plant gets its name. When crushed or brushed against, they release a distinctive citrusy scent that's often described as similar to that of lemongrass, but with a sweeter, more complex fragrance. This scent is also used in the production of citronella oil, which is a popular natural insect repellent.
The oil is extracted through a process of steam distillation from the leaves and stems of the plant. As a tropical plant, citronella prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It is not frost-tolerant, so in colder climates, it's often grown in containers that can be moved indoors during winter.
