🌱 Houseplant Leaf Node Cuttings: The Basics

Propagation by leaf node cuttings is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to grow new plants at home. Many popular houseplants — like pothos, philodendron, hoya, and monstera — can grow roots and become full plants when started from a single cutting.

The leaf node is the key! 🌿
A node is the small bump or joint on the plant’s stem where leaves, roots, or aerial roots grow. When you take a cutting, you need at least one healthy node, because that’s where new roots will sprout.

🪴 Mini Guide: How to Propagate from Leaf Node Cuttings

✂️ Step 1: Choose and Cut

Select a healthy stem with at least one node and one leaf.

Cut just below the node using clean scissors or pruning shears.

💧 Step 2: Prepare for Rooting

Remove any leaves near the bottom that would sit in water or soil.

Make sure at least one node is exposed — roots will form here.

🌊 Step 3: Rooting Options

Water method:

Place the cutting in a jar of clean water, ensuring the node is submerged.

Keep it in bright, indirect light and change the water every few days.

Roots usually appear within 1–3 weeks.

Soil method:

Plant the cutting in moist, well-draining soil.

Keep humidity high (a clear bag or dome helps).

Mist regularly until rooted.

🌿 Step 4: Potting Up

Once roots are 2–3 inches long, transplant into a small pot with fresh soil.

Water lightly and let your new plant adjust to its new home.

🌼 Quick Tips for Success

✅ Always use clean, sharp tools to prevent disease.
✅ Bright, indirect light encourages faster root growth.
✅ Avoid overwatering — soggy conditions can cause rot.
✅ Be patient — every plant roots at its own pace!

Easy to operate.
Color: Black/Battery
Very easy to operate. I was a little confused on how it operated but all I had to do is sit it on top of the can and it operates by itself. When it is done, the lid can be removed or set on top of the can. It doesn't leave any sharp edges. I was using a hand held one but because I have arthritis in my wrist, it is worth the price easy enough for seniors or disabled

Only worked for 1 month.
Color: Black/Battery
This product was delivered on April 20th and worked great. It made a nice clean cut in the metal with no sharp edges and the top of the can lifted up nicely. Yesterday, May 24th, it stopped cutting and unfortunately, the return window closed on May 20th.

Opens the can weird, but functional
Color: Black/Battery
Ehhh it’s easy to use and gets it open, my only issue is that it doesn’t open a can like a regular can opener where it is cut on top of the can and you can push it in the can to drain if needed. Rather it cuts the outside of the can as it spins around, so it doesn’t fit inside the can. Not very handy when you’re opening a can of tuna and want to drain the tuna juice, so I had to keep my manual one, that I was trying to get rid of by buying this electric one 🙃
