Schefflera arboricola ‘Variegata’, commonly known as the Variegated Umbrella Plant, is a classic and easy-to-grow tropical houseplant from the Araliaceae family, native to Taiwan and southern China. This variegated form is especially prized for its bright, marbled foliage that brings instant freshness and colour to any indoor space.

The plant gets its common name from its distinctive umbrella-like arrangement of leaflets, typically seven to nine per stem, radiating gracefully from a central point. In the ‘Variegata’ cultivar, each leaflet is beautifully patterned with shades of green, creamy white, and pale yellow — sometimes splashed or streaked irregularly, giving every leaf a unique look.

Compact, resilient, and low-maintenance, Schefflera arboricola ‘Variegata’ grows well as a tabletop or floor plant and can be trained as a small indoor tree. Its cheerful variegation brightens shaded corners and complements both modern and classic interiors.

Schefflera arboricola ‘Variegata’ – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light to maintain vivid variegation. It can tolerate moderate light, but the creamy tones may fade in very low light. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh direct sunlight, which may scorch the leaves.

Watering

Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil lightly moist during the growing season but never waterlogged. In winter, water less frequently. Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers warmth, 18–26°C. Avoid cold draughts and temperatures below 12°C.

  • Humidity: Adapts to normal indoor humidity but appreciates occasional misting to keep the leaves fresh and glossy.

Soil and Potting

Use a well-draining, peat-free houseplant compost. Adding perlite or grit improves drainage. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh soil and provide space for root growth.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Stop feeding in autumn and winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune regularly to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves. Rotate occasionally to ensure even light exposure on all sides.

Growth and Maturity

A moderately fast grower that can reach 1–1.5 m indoors. It can be pruned to remain compact or allowed to develop a taller, tree-like form with age.

Common Issues

  • Leaf drop: Often due to sudden changes in light or temperature.

  • Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Faded variegation: Insufficient light.

  • Pests: Occasionally mealybugs, spider mites, or scale insects.

Background and Benefits

The Umbrella Plant has been a popular houseplant for decades thanks to its elegant foliage and resilience. The variegated form, ‘Variegata’, is particularly decorative, with bright, patterned leaves that stand out beautifully in mixed plant displays. Like many indoor plants, it helps purify the air, creating a calmer, healthier environment.

Great for 2 Days…see comments
So it’s great toy and had our dog entertained immediately. However probably won’t last very long with medium to large dogs that gets obsessed with killing every toy you give them. Our Pitt mix loved this until she ended it by chewing through the heavy plastic ring that keeps the ropes connected. Without the noted ropes attached, the toy cannot move around. Basically ending the fun. Would be great to start a puppy or smaller dog on. It has multiple modes and is noise and proximity activated. Our dog was obsessed but sadly it was no match for her. 3 stars only because it didn’t last more than two days with our dog.

Good but not tough
My dog loved it but he figured out how to open it pretty quickly. I think I’m doomed to never find an interactive dog toy that can survive my golden

Obsessed, crappy rope
My pitbull mix is obsessed! I was worried he might break it, but he has used it everyday for the past week and we've had no issues. The reason I docked a star is because the rope it comes with lasts minutes. I'm still trying to figure out a good solution of what to tie onto the top. Regardless, he loves it without anything on it, but he chews on the connector piece so I'm worried he will break it if I let him go.
