`🌿 Cephalotus follicularis "Brewer's Black Lids" (Australian Pitcher Plant)

The Western Australian pitcher plant (Cephalotus follicularis), also known as the fly-catcher plant, Albany pitcher plant, or Australian pitcher plant, is a unique carnivorous species native to damp, sandy, and swampy areas of southwestern Australia.

This listing features the Cephalotus "Brewer's Black Lids"

Cephalotus is the only known species in its genus.

It grows from underground rhizomes and produces two types of leaves:

  • Flat (non-carnivorous) leaves for photosynthesis
  • Pitcher leaves, which contain digestive fluids used to trap and digest insects

📦 What You’ll Receive

  • Plant will be shipped potted in a 2.5" pot
  • Ready to grow—no immediate setup needed

Plant sizes:

  • Small: ~1" in diameter, mostly non-carnivorous leaves or very small pitchers
  • Medium: ~1–1.5" in diameter, includes 1–2 juvenile pitchers
  • Large: ~1.5–2" in diameter, a mix of juvenile to larger pitchers
  • XL: ~2–3" in diameter, fuller plant with juvenile to larger pitchers

🌱 Current Growing Conditions

These plants have been grown in stable, controlled conditions:

  • Light: ~12 hours daily under LED grow lights
  • Day Temperature: ~78°F
  • Night Temperature: ~60°F
  • Humidity: ~65–75%

👉 Important: Try to provide similar conditions for the first few weeks to help your plant acclimate smoothly.

🌿 Beginner-Friendly Care Overview

Cephalotus can be slightly sensitive at first, but they thrive with stable conditions and patience.

☀️ Light
Provide bright light to partial sun. Strong lighting encourages better pitcher production and color.

💧 Water

  • Keep the soil damp, not soggy
  • Avoid letting the plant sit in deep water for long periods
  • Use only distilled, rain, or reverse osmosis water

🌫️ Humidity

  • Ideal range: 50–75% humidity
  • Can adapt to average indoor humidity once established

🌡️ Temperature

  • Best between 55–85°F
  • Prefers warm days and cooler nights

🌬️ Airflow

  • Good airflow helps prevent rot and keeps the plant healthy

⚠️ Important Care Tips (Please Read!)

🚫 DO NOT REPOT RIGHT AWAY
Cephalotus are very sensitive to root disturbance. Repotting too soon can shock or kill the plant.
✔️ Allow the plant to fully acclimate before attempting any repotting.

🌿 Handle with care
Avoid disturbing the roots or moving the plant too much. Stability is key.

🍂 Leaf & pitcher changes are normal
It is completely normal for your plant to:

  • Lose some leaves or pitchers after shipping
  • Grow new leaves before producing new pitchers

This is part of the plant adjusting and growing.

🎨 Color Changes

Cephalotus can change color depending on lighting:

  • Lower light: green to lighter tones
  • Bright light: red, burgundy, or darker tones

Color variation is normal and depends on your growing conditions.

🌟 Beginner Tip

If this is your first Cephalotus, think of it as a “slow and steady” plant.
Avoid sudden changes, keep conditions consistent, and be patient—it will reward you with beautiful pitchers over time.

My Aussie loves this bone!
This wishbone is so durable! My Australian shepherd is a big cheese and this is her go-to chew toy. It's a fave! She has spent HOURS chewing on this bone and it has held up super well. It has no smell but understand she can taste the flavor of it. I love having something she can chew on that is safe for her that she enjoys. Great value.

Durable, Great Value Dog Bone!
We’ve ordered several of these that have lasted for months, and my dogs are still working on them. Months. That alone feels like a small miracle. Normally, chews last about 10 minutes. Not this one. This thing is built like it trained for battle. It keeps them busy, satisfied, and focused on something that is actually meant to be chewed. And the best part? It’s way more affordable in the long run. Instead of constantly buying new toys, chews, or replacing destroyed shoes, this one just keeps going. Definitely worth every penny and then some. If you have determined chewers, this is the chew/bone you’ve been looking for.

Dog loves this
My dog absolutely loves the shape of these and will play with it for hours. The material is pretty durable too, though he is a big lab so over time chewed away the top nubs. Eventually tossed it at that point, but got great use out of it before. No bad smell and my pet really enjoys playing with it. It’s not too big either and is really easy to take with you on trips, etc. have bought multiple!

Dog liked it, chewing cat did not
My dog liked it, but I actually got it for my cat that insists on chewing on everything. However, he refused to chew on this toy. He sniffed it once and walked away. So, for dogs I guess it's a decent chewy...
