🌴 Washingtonia robusta — Mexican Fan Palm

Washingtonia robusta, commonly referred to as the Mexican Fan Palm, is a tall, fast-growing, and statuesque palm native to north-western Mexico. It is best known for its slender, straight trunk and large, fan-shaped leaves that form a full, rounded crown — giving it a distinctly tropical, “postcard palm” appearance. In its natural habitat, Washingtonia robusta can grow to over 30 metres tall, but when grown in pots or indoors (in conservatories or atriums), it remains much smaller and slower-growing. The leaves are bright green with segmented, pleated leaflets and fine fibres along the margins, adding a unique texture. This palm thrives in full sun and warm conditions, making it well suited to outdoor planting in Mediterranean or coastal gardens, or as a dramatic container specimen for patios and bright interiors. While it requires a bit more space and warmth than some indoor palms, its striking vertical form and bold presence make it a fantastic statement plant in the right environment.

☀️ Light Requirements

  • Outdoors: Prefers full sun and grows best in open, sunny positions.

  • Indoors: Requires very bright light — ideally direct sun for part of the day. South-facing windows or conservatories are best.

  • Too little light: Results in weak, leggy growth and sparse fronds.

🌡️ Temperature & Hardiness

  • Ideal temperature: 20–32°C (68–90°F)

  • Minimum temperature: Hardy to around –6°C (21°F) when mature, but protect from frost in containers.

  • Hardiness rating: RHS H3–H4 — can survive mild UK winters in coastal or sheltered gardens; container-grown plants should be overwintered in frost-free conditions.

💧 Watering Needs

  • Watering frequency: Water thoroughly when the top 5 cm of soil feels dry. Allow excess water to drain away.

  • Outdoor plants: Drought-tolerant once established, but young plants need regular watering.

  • Winter watering: Reduce frequency; water sparingly if kept in cool indoor conditions.

🪴 Soil & Repotting

  • Soil type: Well-draining, sandy or loamy compost. Palm or cactus compost works well with added grit.

  • pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (6.0–7.5)

  • Repotting: Every 2–3 years or when rootbound. Choose a heavy container to prevent tipping due to its upright growth.

🌱 Feeding

  • Growing season (spring–summer): Feed every 4–6 weeks with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser or a palm-specific feed with added magnesium.

  • Autumn–winter: Pause feeding during dormancy or reduced growth indoors.

✂️ Pruning & Maintenance

  • Pruning: Remove old, brown, or damaged fronds by cutting close to the trunk. Avoid over-pruning — never remove green fronds.

  • Self-cleaning: Fronds do not fall off naturally; regular maintenance improves appearance.

  • Trunk care: The fibrous thatch formed by old frond bases is often retained for ornamental effect.

🌾 Propagation

  • From seed: The most common method. Seeds germinate in warm, moist conditions over several weeks.

  • Note: Not typically propagated by division or cuttings.

🐛 Pests & Problems

  • Common pests: Spider mites, scale insects, and mealybugs, particularly on indoor plants in dry air.

  • Symptoms: Yellowing fronds, sticky residue, or stunted growth.

  • Solutions: Increase humidity, clean fronds, and treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

🧤 Toxicity & Safety

  • Toxicity: Non-toxic to humans and pets.

  • Handling tip: Leaf tips can be sharp — use gloves when pruning or handling large specimens.

🏡 Indoor & Outdoor Care Highlights

  • Excellent statement palm for conservatories, atriums, and large, bright interiors.

  • Outdoors, perfect for Mediterranean-style gardens, coastal landscapes, and poolside planting.

  • Can be grown in large containers on sunny patios or terraces during summer months.

  • Works beautifully as a focal point in tropical-themed planting schemes or modern, minimalist landscapes.

  • Needs space to thrive — best suited to large rooms, greenhouses, or gardens with height.

Fun with a late blooming omega
Format: Kindle
I like this book. The story is fun, cute, and sexy. There's just a little drama, some excellent, steamy scenes, and a fairly good relationship building storyline. I especially like how all the main characters are a bit older than the usual 20 somethings I tend to see in this kind of book. Having said that, I wish there were more descriptions of the places, as well as the food in the fancy restaurant. I enjoyed the cocktails at the club, so I missed that kind of detail when Gray took Madison on a dinner date. I also wish there had been more interaction between Lucas and Madison, and Lucas and Rian. It felt a bit lopsided, with a focus on Rian, Madison, and Gray. I wish it had been proofread - there are a lot of typos, but nothing too distracting.

Madison Deserved Better
Format: Kindle
Madison was a beta...except she wasn't any longer. She was a late presenting Omega. And she was struggling. She was tall and thin, not tiny and curvy. She was opinionated. She was everything an Omega was not. After suffering through her first heat, her friends took her to Ardor, a club where Omegas came to safely find Alphas. She's not expecting much but then she connects with a sexy beta. And when she meets his Alphas, they set her body on fire. Maybe, she's found her no-strings-attached heat pack. Maybe, she's found something more. I could not connect with the characters in this book, so their story never resonated with me. And there was no love story; there was sex. Grey made it clear from the beginning that he had a true love and it was his beta boy, Rian. He went so far as to reassure Rian “Say the word, I’ll never touch her again. Lucas can put the babies in her. I only need you, beta boy”. So, Madison was there for babies, no emotions needed. Nice. No, thank you. I want the Omega to be the center of their world, not an incubator. Lucas and Rian weren't any better. After her heat, they let her leave. Not one of them made her feel valued. No one gave her a reason to stay or even offered a cuddle. And the sex didn't even come across as mind-blowing. Madison deserved better.

Pretty Darn Good
Format: Kindle
So I’ve been on a omega kick and this definitely hit the spot. Madison was frustrating at times with how she acted towards Lucas, Gray, and Rian. It was like she said towards the end, she didn’t believe she deserved nice things. It would have been nice to hear from her best friends again. They kind of were there in the beginning and the gone except for mention of text messages received from them. I feel like her friends would have been great help in encouraging Madison to go with the pack and never give Brent another chance because he was toxic. I loved Rian. His personality was awesome. His humor. His ability to make Madison comfortable whenever she was feeling overwhelmed. And the fact he fell for her and she fell for him first. They are cute together. I do feel like Lucas was the odd man out though. Like Lucas didn’t develop as much of a relationship with Madison. I would have really liked to see more development in the relationship between them. It was also the same with him and Rian. There is really no relationship displayed. Most of the relationship being displayed is between Rian and Gray. Nevertheless, I loved reading about the dynamic that came to fruition during the entirety of this story. Madison finally got her happiness. And Brent finally got punched in the face. Everyone got exactly what they deserve.
